Read More	Osborne County Farmer Journal Nov. 7, 1918 Jane Pearse (Mrs. John Wineland) was born in Tuscarawas county, Ohio, March 14 1840, and died in Osborne Oct. 27, 1918, aged 78 years, 9 months, and 13 days. Her parents died when she was very small and she was raised by an older married sister. There were three brothers and four sisters in her family, all having died before she passed away. She was married to John Wineland in Pottawatomie county, Iowa, Jan. 29, 1859. To this union were born six sons and one daughter- William Lafayette, Arthur, George, Clinton, Cary L. and Mrs. Ollie Fruit. All are residents of Osborne county except Cory L., who lives in Nebraska and is unable to be present at the funeral on account of being down with influenza. Deceased had 32 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Wineland was a real pioneer. Shortly after the she made a trip from Iowa to Colorado following the Platte river trail from Omaha. Their team consisted of two oxen and two cows. They were attacked by indians on this trip and were rescued by members of a government camp a half mile above them. At this time an Indian offered Mr. Wineland 20 ponies for his wife. Denver was a straggling hamlet of a few houses at this time. On this trip to Colorado Mrs. Wineland carried a baby three weeks old with her. They returned to Iowa the same year, their venture proved a failure. When the Civil war broke out Mr. Wineland entered the service, leaving his wife alone with two small children. In 1871 they came to Jewell county, Kansas, where they lived two years and then they returned to Iowa, coming again to Kansas and Osborne county in 1874, going onto their claim in Kill Creek township. They lived in a tent or camped under the trees until they could build a stone house. She never lived in a soddy, as most people did in those early days. The stone house they built is still standing and in use. They were hospitable people, their home always being open to any who sought a night's lodging. They lived on a much traveled road and sometimes had as many as 20 people for over night. They lived on the Russell Kerwin Road and their place was headquarters always for a general good time. Mrs. Wineland had always expressed a wish that when she was called it might soon be over-she wanted to go quickly. She had her wish, being sick only about one and a half hours. John Wineland and family wish to thank all who gave help and sympathy during their recent bereavement in the death of Mrs. Wineland.
