Description	:	Co B 55 VA Inf C.S.A. John Zelotes Gayle was born January 10, 1840 to Matthew Gayle and Ann Elizabeth Fitchett and was, presumably, named after his father's brother, Zelotes Gayle. He married Virginia Francis Brown on January 18, 1866 at Groomsville, the Miller plantation on North River in Gloucester County. John had been a private in Company B, 55th Regiment, Virginia Infantry, Confederate States Army, having enlisted on May 24, 1861 at Urbanna, VA. John Zelotes Gayle was born January 10, 1840 to Matthew Gayle and Ann Elizabeth Fitchett and was, presumably, named after his father's brother, Zelotes Gayle. He married Virginia Francis Brown on January 18, 1866 at Groomsville, the Miller plantation on North River in Gloucester County. John had been a private in Company B, 55th Regiment, Virginia Infantry, Confederate States Army, having enlisted on May 24, 1861 at Urbanna, VA. This Company was organized as an independent battery, April 28, 1862 and subsequently became Fleet's Company, VA Artillery, C, S, A. and muster roll of that Company for March and April 1862 is the only roll that shows him present. This Company was disbanded by order dated October 4, 1862 and he subsequently became a private of Capt. Woolfolk's Company, VA Light Artillery, C.S.A. The muster roll of that Company for January and February, 1865 last on file, shows him present. John Z. Gayle was wounded at Gettysburg, July 2, 1963. He was shot twice the same day. The first wound so disabled him that he could not walk. He attempted to crawl off the field when a fuse plug out of a bomb shell entered his side and lodged under his backbone. He was considered mortally wounded; fell into enemies and was a prisoner for 9 months at Port Lookout, MD. This was a terrible wound and greatly shortened his days. He was at Appomattox Court House and was paroled on April 9, 1865. John died July 14, 1888 at Urbanna, when his youngest child, India, was just two months old and at his request was buried on his own land in Urbanna. In recent years, his remains were moved to Shackelford's Chapel, Plainview, King & Queen County, VA. John was master of the Urbanna Lodge #83, A. F. & A. M. Virginia moved with her five children back Groomsville and she died there September 27, 1927.
