(also) Obituary -- Joseph Cool -- "After life's fitfull fever, he sleeps well." In this, the third issue of our paper, we are called upon to record the first death since its publication. To no ordinary personage are the following lines devoted; but to one who enjoyed the universal esteem of his fellow-men, and whose sphere was the loftier walks of life. With surprise and genuine regret, the news of the death of Mr. Joseph Cool, the founder of Coolville, and our representative for two terms, was received by our people on Monday last. Born in Montgomery County, New York, on the 24th of October, 1820, he reached the age of 62 years, 3 months and five days; -- just as he was beginning to reap the fruits, and enjoy the efforts of a busy and successful career. On March the 30th 1847 he was married to Miss Nancy Bates, who has been, in his long and varied journey through life, a true, kind and dutiful wife, and indulgent mother to the seven grown children who are left with her, to mourn the loss of him, their guide, counselor, and support. Born in the same town, with tastes and aspirations alike, they soon looked for a larger and wider field of usefulness, and in emigrated to Delaware County, Iowa. Soon after, they removed to Anamosa, Jones County, in the same state, where Mr Cool followed the carpenter's trade in summer and teaching school in winter. His sterling qualities of character soon brought him into prominence there, and for many years he was a member of the county supervisors of Jones County. His strong abolitionist tendencies, and convictions in espousing the cause of the North during the war, sometimes placed him in dangerous quarters, but he came forth from the ordeal a hero, and a man. One instance is related of his reading a poem at the Post Office at Anamosa, referring to the "glorious cause of the North" with such force and unction, that the Postmaster -- of rebel stripe -- ordered those assembled to assault, and forcibly eject him. His withstood this and similar attacks with that force of character and manhood, which afterward stamped him a leader among men. During the bloody strife, his house was the home of the orphan, and a hospital for the sick, ailing, and wounded. Heeding no trouble nor expense, with untiring energy he worked for the glory of his country, and his record shines as bright and clear, on the books Above, as any General's who moved an army to the front on the field of battle. In the year of 1876 he moved with his family to Kansas, and settled in Cloud Co., near Glasco, where he opened up and approved a now fine farm. Hiring the best of help he supervised the tillage and cultivation of the soil, with the same masterly skill exhibited in all his undertakings. No wonder that he soon became respected and beloved in this community, and in the fall of 1878 our people demonstrated their confidence and esteem by sending him to the State Legislature. To this office he was re-elected in 1880 and proved, by his unselfish and untiring efforts to espouse the rights of the people, a most worthy and efficient officer. He was also a great temperance worker, and aided materially in the prohibition movement in this state. Early in life he embraced the Universalist faith and practiced that broad and comprehensive doctrine which gives all fellow creatures such a hopeful view of life beyond this mortal sphere. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F. for eighteen years, joining the Delphos Lodge No. 146 on coming to Kansas. His last illness was brief, extending only over the period of a few weeks. The primary cause of his death was a fever sore from which he had suffered from childhood, resulting finally in blood-poisoning. His decline was fast, but gradually though his last days were cheered with bright moments in which he conversed cheerfully and hopeful as of old. On Monday at 2 o'clock p.m. the last moment came and he passed away with his hands in those of his wife and daughters. His only son, aged 20 who was teaching school at Manhattan, Iowa, was telegraphed for but did not arrive in time to witness his father's death. Wednesday at 11 o'clock the funeral cortège moved from the house toward the M.E. church (known as the Bethel) about four miles from Coolville. Forty vehicles containing some two hundred persons, made up the long and silent procession, that followed the remains to its last resting place. Arriving at the church, the solemn exercises were opened by Mrs. Gillette, the venerable and eloquent lady preacher of the Universalist Church. After a touching prayer, an impromptu choir sang "Asleep in Jesus." Deducting a text from St. John, Chapter 14, Mrs. Gillette delivered a touching discourse, dilating on the virtues of the deceased, and giving a short biography of his life. It was one of those feeling sermons, that go home to the human heart, touching the sympathetic chords and soothing the riven breast. After another hymn by the choir, the remains were taken in charge of the I.O.O.F. who were present from Delphos and Glasco. The last solemn rites of the Order which were very impressing were delivered over the grave, then all that remained of the great Joseph Cool was laid gently in the silent tomb. As we stood there among the throng of bowed and reverential heads we could not but recall the immortal words of Shakespeare: "When he dies, nature will stand up, and say to all the world, this was a man." Thus in the afternoon of a gray cold winter day, a tried and true good man was borne to his last resting place, another husband, father, friend laid away to await the great awakening. Our pen is inadequate to do justice, and our space, too limited to record all his good deeds, and all the expressions of esteem we heard spoken of the deceased. He leaves a sorrowing widow, seven children, a sister, and one brother to mourn their loss. To the patient mourners and friends let me say; He is not gone. "He has only wrapped the draperies of his couch about him, and laid down to peaceful dreams." The oldest daughter, Mrs. Bates, aged 35, has been a widow eight years. The second, is the wife of Chas. C. King, living about 4 miles from Coolville. The third, is the wife of Mr. H. Rogers, also lives in the neighborhood. The fourth resides in Iowa, wife of C.D. Hosford. The two remaining daughters, are single, and living at home. Miss Minnie is engaged in teaching school, and Miss Alice, aged 16, is now the sorrowing mother's tenderest care. The brother and sister of the deceased live in the east.
