Painter 4 Jul 1838 Mary Painter 24 Apr 1841 Rachel Ann Painter 21 Sep 1847 [A Genealogical History of the Robert and Abigail Pancoast Hunt Family Chapter IV; Page 119-124] “Joseph, fifth son of Jacob and Mary Hunt Painter, bom on the home farm near Winchester, Va., June 27th, 1801, when a year old was taken with the family to an uncleared section of land, located in the unbroken forest a mile and a half north of what is now the city of Salem, O., which land Jacob had entered from the United States Government in the summer of 1802. Here Joseph passed his childhood, youth and early manhood as did the children of the early pioneers generally, and on August 20th, 1820, he married Rebecca, daughter of Reuben and Elizabeth Griffith, bom July 12th, I800, residing at Salem, Ohio. They began housekeeping on a quarter section of land adjoining the home farm, where they resided for fifty years. They were farmers all their lives and members of the Society of Friends. The author very well remembers Joseph Painter, whom he knew half a century ago, as a man of medium size, of quiet dignified bearing, with a benignant handsome face and happy temperemant. His dress was that peculiar to the Quakers, always neat and comely. The home of Jacob and Rebecca was naturally refined, genteel and hospitable. They were unostentatious pillars of the church under whose auspices they were bom and reared, married and buried. Becoming weakened with the infirmities of age the worthy couple retired to Damascus, O., where they d., Joseph, December 30th, 1880, and Rebecca, September 27th, 1887. Interment in Friends' cemetery at Damascus."
