This Joseph Severns 1768-1857 is often confused with his first cousin, Joseph Severns 1759-1848, buried in Jelloway, Knox County, Ohio, and whose wife was also named Mary (see memorial 211409013). The wife of this Joseph Severns 1768-1857, Mary Severns, was apparently also his cousin (a sister of Joseph Severns 1759-1848). Joseph appears in the 1840 census for New Castle, Coshocton Co., Ohio, with one male age 15-19 and one female age 15-19. He appears in the 1850 census for New Castle with 3 others, one a "laborer". Hill, Jr. (compilation), 1881, p. 569, http://www.archive.org/details/cu31924009823455 : "The congress land, which constitutes the southeastern quarter of the township, was surveyed into half sections, of 320 acres each, by Silas Bent, Jr., in 1803. Unlike congress land in many other townships this was settled in an early day. In 1810, Joseph Severns, emigrating from Bucks county, Pennsylvania, entered land in sections 11 and 20. His first cabin was built on the ridge in the northwest quarter of section 20. He died in 1857, being above eighty years of age. His oldest son, Samuel, is still living in the southern part of the township. He served in the war of 1812 and is probably the oldest person in the township, having reached his eighty-sixth birthday on the 17th day of October, 1880." The 1850 census reports he said he was age 81 and born in VA, so that would confirm that he was born about 1769. 1 April 1805 - Joseph Severns, Jr and Mary his wife, of Monongalia County, VA to William Michael 118 on waters of Little Sandy Creek known to be the same survey that said Severns has lived on for some years past. This is the same 118 acres the Joseph bought from his father in 1795. (This same year William Darling sold his land.) 1806 - Joseph came from VA about 1806 and settled in Newcastle Twp, Coshocton Co, OH. Joseph Severns and Thomas Butler are reputed as having come into the Newcastle Twp, Coshocton Co, OH about 1806. They were both from Virginia, the south branch of the Potomac. They were connected with Robert Darling and he removed to Ohio about the same time. ... Joseph is buried next to his wife Mary in the Butler Cemetery at Mohawk Dam, Coshocton Co, OH and since they are buried in the Butler Cemetery, some Butler researchers thought that the name of this Joseph's wife was Mary Butler; but in the will of Daniel Severns of Knox Co, OH in 1823 shows that she was Mary Severns, daughter of Daniel Severns and that she married her cousin Joseph Severns.
