He received the Presidential Commendation for Outstanding Community Achievement for Vietnam Era Veterans in 1979. ____ March 26, 2004, Mills, ex-U.S. attorney, dies By Ed Koch, LAS VEGAS SUN Lamond Mills, a colorful U.S. attorney for Nevada who during the 1980s oversaw the convictions of crooked politicians and considered himself just "a good ol' country boy," died today of cancer at his Las Vegas home. He was 62. Services for Mills, a Vietnam War hero who was U.S. attorney for Nevada from 1981 to 1985, will be noon Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel at 3300 N. Buffalo Drive. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Mills at the time of his death was a member of the Colorado River Commission and was in private practice with his sons at the firm of Mills and Mills LLC. He was U.S. attorney during a turbulent time when top local political leaders were brought down in the Operation Yobo bribery sting. Those convicted during Mills' tenure were powerful state Sen. Floyd Lamb, County Commissioners Jack Pettiti and Woodrow Wilson and state Sen. Gene Echols. However, Mills didn't always see eye to eye with FBI agent-in-charge Joe Yablonsky, who spearheaded Operation Yobo, and once called Yablonsky "an embarrassment." During his years as U.S. attorney, Mills was not afraid to anger his bosses in Washington, once proclaiming he would have fugitive brothel owner Joe Conforte arrested if he returned to the United States from South America to testify against then-U.S. District Judge Harry Claiborne. Mills was accused of defying an agreement made by his bosses in their efforts to convict Claiborne on tax evasion. After Conforte gave testimony considered not believable and the first Claiborne trial ended in a hung jury, Washington officials apologized to Mills. Claiborne was prosecuted again without Conforte and was convicted. U.S. Magistrate Lawrence Leavitt, who served briefly as Mills' chief assistant, called Mills a "man of great integrity." "He did not try cases as U.S. attorney, but he was an outstanding trial lawyer," Leavitt said. After returning to private practice he practiced criminal law, Leavitt said. Leavitt said that while "Lamond did not fit the prototype of a slick, sophisticated U.S. attorney, he grew into the job. But the fact of the matter is that his folksiness made him a great trial lawyer. He was a great communicator." ____ Ex-U.S. attorney dies after brief battle with cancer By CARRI GEER THEVENOT, REVIEW-JOURNAL Former U.S. attorney Lamond Mills, a decorated Vietnam War veteran who practiced law for three decades in Las Vegas, died Friday after a brief battle with cancer. He was 62. "He served his God, his family, his country, and he served his government as U.S. attorney," said friend and former partner John Lukens. "He served his church. He was an old-school gentleman, and they don't make people like him anymore." Byron Mills, Lamond Mills' son and law partner, said his father was diagnosed with stomach cancer Feb. 25 and underwent surgery three days later. He never recovered and was released Thursday evening from Summerlin Hospital Medical Center to return to his Las Vegas home, where he died Friday morning surrounded by family. "He was incredibly concerned about taking care of his clients. That was his big concern in his last few days," said Lamond Mills' longtime friend and office manager, Jo Anne Pierpont. "He was an attorney at heart. He loved his job. He loved helping people. That was what Lamond was," Pierpont added. Another son, Gregor Mills, also practiced law with his father. District Judge Stewart Bell said he visited Lamond Mills about three weeks ago at the hospital, but he was not awake. "He was one of the good guys," Bell said of his longtime friend. "He was a fine lawyer and even better man. No matter what he told you, you could trust it implicitly." The judge also said Lamond Mills had an admirable attitude. "He always had a kind word," Bell said. "He always had a smile on his face. He always saw the best in life and the best in people." Lamond Mills was born Dec. 19, 1941, in Overton and graduated in 1960 from Moapa Valley High School. He received a bachelor's degree in 1967 from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and his law degree in 1973 from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Lamond Mills also spent four years in the Army, including a one-year tour of duty in Vietnam that ended in February 1970. Byron Mills said his father was awarded three Bronze Stars, including one for "heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force," and two Purple Hearts for his service in Vietnam. He said his father was injured twice during the war. In one incident, he took a bullet to the chest, and in the other, he was sitting on an armored personnel carrier when it struck a mine. After graduating from law school, Lamond Mills joined a law firm in Las Vegas. Mills worked in the Clark County public defender's office from 1975 to 1976, when he returned to private practice. He served as U.S. attorney for Nevada from 1981 to 1985, after being appointed by President Reagan. "I think I can say Nevada's a little different -- a little better -- because I have been U.S. attorney," he told the Review-Journal in 1985. "Understand that I don't mean that egotistically. What I mean is that a person doesn't often have an opportunity to have an impact on his community. I've had that opportunity, and I think I've accomplished something." He held the position during the prosecution of a public corruption case known as Operation Yobo, which led to the convictions of several Nevada politicians, including state Sen. Floyd Lamb. During the 1985 interview, Lamond Mills said he thought Nevadans gained a new respect for the legal system as a result of the convictions in the corruption case. "It dispelled the myth that some people are above the law," he said. Longtime Las Vegas attorney Richard Wright, who represented Lamb in the corruption case, called Lamond Mills a "trusted, honorable U.S. attorney and private practitioner after he left office." In recent years, Wright said, he sometimes turned to Lamond Mills for advice on dealing with the types of ethical issues that confront defense attorneys. "He had good, mature judgment," Wright said. Senior U.S. District Judge Lloyd George described Lamond Mills as a "talented, gifted guy who is a person with the highest level of integrity." "Lamond has been a good friend for many, many years," George said. "He's never been a showboat. He's just been a person of substance." Nevada Supreme Court Justice William Maupin said he had known Lamond Mills since he recruited him in 1972 to join the law firm then known as Beckley, Delanoy & Jemison. Lamond Mills chose another firm instead. "It was a great honor that he served as one of my campaign chairs in 1996," Maupin said. He described Lamond Mills as a loyal friend, as well as a great man, father and husband. "He was also known by everyone in the legal profession as a great and ethical lawyer," the justice said. Services for Lamond Mills are scheduled for noon on Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center, 7500 Tule Springs, near Durango Drive and U.S. Highway 95. Viewing will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the same location on Tuesday and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the church's Logandale Stake Center. Burial is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Logandale Cemetery, under the direction of Moapa Valley Mortuary. Lamond Mills is survived by his wife, Lynne; four sons, Byron, Gregor and Brandon of Las Vegas and Robert of Logandale; two brothers, Eugene of Orem, Utah, and Stephen of Las Vegas; two sisters, Marilyn Nichols of Cheney, Wash., and Sharon Bayles of Overton; and 13 grandchildren. He never picked on anyone. "As a defense attorney, he was very colorful in cross-examination and closing arguments -- an imposing figure in the courtroom. He was a great Nevadan." A fourth-generation Nevadan, Mills in 1981 described himself to the Sun as "a good ol' country boy." "I enjoy combat. I enjoy trial work," he said. Sen. Paul Laxalt hand-picked Mills, a Republican, for the post in 1981. For five years before that he was senior partner in the firm of Mills, Galliher, Lukens, Gibson, Schwartzer & Shinehouse. Mills earned a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University in 1967, joined the Army and was an honor graduate from Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga., a year later. A first lieutenant, Mills was wounded in combat during the Vietnam War. He received a Bronze Star with a V for valor and oak leaf cluster, a Purple Heart and the Army Commendation Medal for Outstanding Service. In 1979 he received the Presidential Commendation for Outstanding Community Achievement for Vietnam Era Veterans After the war Mills earned his law degree from the University of Utah in 1973. A civic leader, Mills was an Explorer Scout adviser and Scout master and was involved in other youth activities. He also served as chairman of the Logandale Town Board, member of Moapa Valley Health Services Inc. and the Moapa Fire District Board. Mills was a member of the American Bar Association, State Bar of Nevada, the Nevada Trial Lawyers Association, the Clark County Bar Association and the Nevada Family Lawyers Association. His survivors include his wife, Lynne, and four sons, Robert, Byron, Gregor and Brandon, and 13 grandchildren.
