He began his formal schooling in a little one room adobe school house. Later he went to Overton to finish his elementary schooling. Early in life he showed his love for farming when he enrolled in the Smith Hughes program when he was in the 8th grade. At the age of 14 he was doing a man's work. Sometimes he would have to irrigate all night so he would turn the water and then lie down at the end of the furrow with his hand in the furrow so that when the water got there, it would wake him up. His father could always depend on his doing the chores he had been assigned to do. In 1920 he went to the Moapa Valley High School from which he graduated in 1924. During his high school days he was very active in sports. He was guard on the basketball team, catcher on the baseball team and even played football before the days they wore pads and uniforms in their games. He was a handsome young man with beautiful eyes and eyelashes so long that one girl said she wondered if he used a comb on them. He was a good dancer and loved to dance at the high school dances. In the fall of 1925 he enrolled in the College of Agriculture at the University of Nevada at Reno. Money was hard to come by on the ranch in Logandale so to help himself with finances, he got a job in the "gow hall", university cafeteria, where he polished silver, waited on tables and did various other jobs of that sort to pay his board. He was invited to join a national fraternity while at the University and through his associations there, he made many life long friends. In the spring of 1929 he graduated with a BS in agriculture and returned back home to the farm to help his father. On August 31, 1931, he married his high school sweetheart, Katherine Wells, in the St. George Temple. He moved his new bride into a little home he had helped to build close to his parents' home on the farm. It was during the depression, but because of his industry, his family was always well taken care of. He and Katherine started their family immediately. At the death of his father in 1938, he took over the farm, paid off a loan on the place and became one of the leading farmers in the valley. He bought and build up a dairy herd and became one of the charter members of the local dairy association. He was a member of the Nevada Dairy Commission and served as president of the Clark County Farm Bureau for a number of years. He was chairman of the Moapa Valley Conservation District until his death in 1972.
