Regarding this Larkin, Columbus Phipps wrote, "My grandfather Joseph Phipps was born Jan. 1st, 1776 and died July 23rd, 1848. He married Nancy McMillan, they had four sons: Larkin, Alexander, John Mack and Joseph and eight daughters: Rena, Peggy, Gincy, Emily, Mazy, Drucy, Jane and Nancy. No better women were ever reared in this county. The oldest son Larkin married, while intoxicated, a Miss Barton but did not live with her long; just stepped off one day! He was about 19 years old and was never seen here again." As Tim Phipps noted in a comment, Larkin is mentioned in the will of his father Joseph Phipps. That will, presumably a Grayson County, Virginia will, is quoted in John C. Mullins and F. Duval Craven in the book THE PHIPPS FAMILY OF N.C. AND VA: "4thly. I give to my son Larkin Phipps, one horse bridle and saddle and if he returns to his County again, I give to him all of my lands lying on the waters of Fox Creek, by the meeting house. If my son Larkin never returns, I give my land lying on Fox Creek by the meeting house to my Grandson Jackson Phipps for him to have possession of the same when he becomes to be twenty one years of age. Should my Grandson Jackson Phipps die and leave no lawful heirs, I request it to be sold and equally divided amongst my daughters." The marriage of Larkin Phipps is included in the online collection titled Virginia Marriages, 1785-1940 in the LDS FamilySearch website. There, the marriage (presumably extracted from county records) is listed as involving Larkin Phipps and Charity Barton, and as having taken place 15 Mar 1834 in Grayson County, Virginia. The same collection lists the marriage of their son Jackson Phipps to Mary (Polly) Osborn. (In those days, Polly was, of course, a common nickname for Mary.) The collection lists the marriage as that of Jackson Phipps to Polly Osborn on 12 Feb 1857 in Grayson County, Virginia. He was 22 and she was 20. Both were single. According to the record, Jackson was born in 1835 in Grayson County (the year after his parent's marriage), and Mary Osborn was born in 1837, also in Grayson County. Jackson's parents are given as Larkin and Charity Phipps, Mary's as Enoch and Jane Osborn. Mary appears as Mary in the 1860 census. Jackson is listed in the 1850 census in Grayson County, Virginia, enumerated 8 Oct 1850, as born in Virginia about 1834. He was living with David C. Phipps and Washington Phipps, who were both born in North Carolina. Their relationship is unknown. Jackson's household is listed in the census again on 26 Sep 1860, in Grayson County with post office address at Bridle Creek. He and his wife are listed with a son, Larkin Phipps, born about 1857 in Virginia. They were living next to Jackson's uncle Alexander Phipps, brother of Jackson's father Larkin.
