Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at First Christian Church, Fort Benton, with Rev. Todd Wilson officiating. Burial was in Riverside cemetery with all the grandchildren serving as pallbearers. Laura was born to Emil and Lola Briese at their home in Waseca, Minn., on Oct. 27, 1905. She was the oldest of seven children. They moved to Washington in 1910 and in 1910 to a homestead about five miles north of Loma. At first they lived in a tent and the stove sat out in the open. There was no water on the homestead so the family used barrels in a horse drawn wagon to haul water from the river. Laura married John McKeever in 1927. They farmed about 12 miles north of Loma, where they raised six children, along with lots of chickens and cows. During their 53 years of marriage together, Laura and John exemplified the strength and importance of family. John passed away in August 1980. Laura then began to travel, often with her sister Grace, visiting Europe, Canada and many states in the U.S., and went on a Caribbean cruise with a grandson and his family. Laura married Irvin Works in 1983. They enjoyed dancing and traveling and Laura kept busy with plenty of activities. Never content to sit still, Laura would often be seen walking around Fort Benton greeting others with a smile on her way. She became an inspiration to many. Survivors include daughters, Ruby Lohse of Carter, Carol Works of Big Sandy, and Anita Knaub of Laurel; sons, Lyle McKeever and Ed McKeever of Loma, and Earl McKeever of Fort Benton; sisters, Beulah Thurber of Great Falls and Annabel Schoonover of Fort Benton; a brother, Herbert Briese of Loma; 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents; husbands, John McKeever and Irvin Works; a grandson, a great-granddaughter, two brothers and a sister.
