Barber, one of Atchison county's finest women, passed away today at her home near Cummings. Born on a farm near Hawthorne within sight of the home in which she and her husband spent the entire half century of their married life, Mrs. Barber had lived all her life in Atchison county. Read More	Obit. from The Atchison Globe newspaper Mrs. D.P. Barber Dies at Home Near Cummings After an extended illness, Mrs. D.P. Barber, one of Atchison county's finest women, passed away today at her home near Cummings. Born on a farm near Hawthorne within sight of the home in which she and her husband spent the entire half century of their married life, Mrs. Barber had lived all her life in Atchison county. She was 72 years of age. Mrs. Barber was a daughter of the late Captain and Mrs. A. S. Speck, who for many years lived on a farm near Hawthorne. Her marriage to Mr. Barber took place at the residence of her parents September 8, 1881. The daughter of pioneer parents, Captain and Mrs. Speck having come to Kansas in 1856, three years before her birth, Mrs. Barber went through all the hardships of the early settlers both as a girl and as a bride. Three days before Mr. and Mrs. Barber were married, the house in which they expected to go to housekeeping and all its contents were destroyed by fire. Both Mr. and Mrs. Barber descended from early American stock. Mrs. Barber's ancestors came to America in the Mayflower and those of Mr. Barber fought in the Revolutionary war. Surviving are Mr. Barber, who is 80 years of age and in good health; one daughter, Mrs. F. C. Howard of near Cummings, and three grandchildren, Ruth, Helen and Fred C., Jr., children of Mr. and Mrs. Howard. Funeral arrangements had not been completed this afternoon but the services probably will be held Monday. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon cemetery. Sawin & Douglass are in charge. The body now is at the Sawin and Douglass undertaking parlors.
