OLUF JOHNSON SATURDAY EVENING Last Rites Held Tuesday Afternoon For Esteemed Woman Mrs. Oluf Johnson passed away on Saturday, evening, June 20, 1953, at the Akron Hospital at the age of 79 years and one month, after a brief illness, although not having been in the best of health the past few years. Lena Carlson was born. May 20, 1874, near Trondheim, Norway. She was baptized and confirmed in Lonke church, Stjordalen. She came to America in 1898, coming directly to Elk Point, S.D. She was united in marriage with Oluf Johnson on January 15, 1902, by Pastor O.A. Norem at a Lutheran parsonage in Sioux City, Iowa. She had always lived in the Richland vicinity, with the exception of two years, when she lived in Akron. Mrs. Johnson was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran church and held a Life Membership, a gift from her daughters, in the W.M.F.; also, she had a Life Membership in the W.M.F. of the Trinity Lutheran church of Akron. She and her husband observed their golden wedding anniversary on January 15, 1952. Those preceding her in death were: four brothers and a sister, all of whom resided in Norway, and a son, who passed away in infancy. Survivors include the husband; four daughters, Mrs. Alpha Hitzemann, Chatsworth, Iowa; Gladys, at home; Mrs. Mae Rawlings, Sioux City, Iowa, and Mrs. Ferne Amundson, Elk Point, S.D.; one son, Carrol, at home; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; also, a sister, Mrs. Petra Dahl, Bellingham, Wash. Funeral services were held at 1:30 at the home and 2:30 at the South St. Paul Lutheran church, near Elk Point, on Tuesday afternoon. Pastor A.P. Tidemann officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Myrtle Kjose, accompanied by Mrs. Oliver Groethe, sang a solo at the house. A quartet sang two songs at the church. Pallbearers were: Arthur Ahrens, Elmer Heeren, Burdette Amundson, Orland Lawrence, Earl Horton and Eric Olund. Out-of-town relatives and friends in attendance were: Mrs. Lucy Johnson, Onamia, Minn.; Mrs. Earl Coleman, Mr. and Mrs. John Larson, Mrs. John Seline, Martin Dahl, of Sioux City; John Aalfs, Humboldt, S.D.; Mrs. L.C. Gardinier, Sioux Falls, S.D. ).; Mrs. Oluf Paulson, Mrs. Ralph Helm, Mrs. Ben Paulson, Mrs. Earl Peterson, of Centerville, S.D., Mrs. Luella Amundson, of Yankton, S.D. Mrs. Johnson was a kind and devoted wife and mother, loved and respected, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
