Services were 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Read More	MAPLETON, Iowa -- Leon Bernard Hupke, 71, of Boulder, Colo., formerly of Mapleton departed from this world May 13, 2009, after surgery at Boulder Community Hospital in Boulder. Services were 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Leon was born in the small town of Mapleton on July 11, 1937, to Bernard "Ben" Leo Hupke and Lucille (Rauterkus) Hupke. He lived and started school in Mapleton. In the third grade, he met his future wife, Janet Matilda Godberson. During his time in Mapleton, he studied with his father to work as an electrician until he graduated from high school in 1955. He and Janet were married in Mapleton on April 11, 1959. On Jan. 15, 1960, their first daughter, Juanita Marie Hupke, was born. In 1964, after the birth of their first child, they moved to Boulder. Between 1964 and 1980, he worked construction for Stevenson Electric as an electrician. On May 14, 1968, their second daughter, Jeraldine Lynn Hupke, was brought into the world. As his work with Stevenson ended, he began at the University of Colorado at Boulder as an electrician. In 2000, he retired from the University of Colorado. He was a respected member of the Catholic church all his life. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 50 years, Janet (Godberson) Hupke; his sister, Mary "Fritz" Francine (Hupke) Gretch of Montana; his brother, Robert Hupke of California; his two daughters, Juanita (Hupke) Griggs and Jeraldine Hupke; and five grandchildren, Ashley, Kelley, Kevin, Jessica and Jamie. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Donna (Hupke) Jones and Floretta (Hupke) Weber. We all love and miss you "Pop Pop".
