He was born in Wythe County on March 11, 1867. His entire life has been spent within its borders. Very near the place of his birth, quietly, and peacefully as he had lived, he passed to his eternal reward at his home on Saturday afternoon, June 2, 1951, aged 84 years, two months, and 21 days. He had been ill for a lengthy period of time. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cynthia Ellen Hale Ward. Their marriage on December 25, 1889, united two of this valley’s pioneer families and the home they established and maintained has done credit to their noble heritage. Surviving is one daughter and four sons, Gwyn Ward and Basil F. Ward, Spring Valley; Mrs. Ruth Bourne, Spring Valley; Everett Ward, Portsmouth, Ohio; and Leon H Ward, Bluefield, WV. There are also seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren that survive him. Born and reared in an old time Christian home, where culture combined hard work and character, the foundation was laid for the tower of strong character and influence that have blessed this valley for more than three-quarters of a century. So long has he been a part of the church life in this community that no one thinks to ask when it began, but the Ebenezer Church records show that he was received into this church in March 1885, under the ministry of the late Rev John Moring, and his membership of 66 years is the oldest of any member on record there. To him, the church was God’s house and he loved ut; faithful in his attendance until his feeble tottering limbs had to be supported by those he loved in order to reach his accustomed place. Funeral services were held Monday, at 2:30 pm, at Ebenezer Methodist Church, Spring Valley, under Rev S S Phipps, pastor of the Spring Valley circuit.
