Ankeny, who met death on the Burlington railroad tracks a mile east of Villisca early Tuesday morning of last week, was made at an inquest held Friday forenoon at the A. B. Wolfe funeral chapel where the body was taken to be prepared for burial. The following verdict was returned to the coroner’s jury. “Leslie Ankeny met his death on September 8, 1936, by being struck by a train in the immediate vicinity of where his body was found, or a very short distance east of the railroad bridge approximately 300 years east of the city limits of Villisca. From the testimony and information rendered at the inquest we are hereby unable to state definitely whether this death of Lesie Ankey was intentional or accidental. However, the grater weight of evidence points to accidental death. The members of the coroner’s jury were Vaughn Hale, Harold F. Winter, and Richard F. Runyan. At the time of the death of the young man it is believed he committed suicide by throwing himself into the train which killed him and it was thought unnecessary to hold an inquest. However, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ankeny, were not satisfied with that decision and the inquest was held by Coroner Walter Sellergren of Red Oak at their request. Evidence was brought out at the investigation that Ankeny had told his estranged wife on July 27, when he went to her home to plead with her to return to him, that he would never live with anyone else, also that on the night of his death he told Roy Wright that he was going to the Ankey mine northeast of Villisca and “blow himself up.” It was established also that he had often gone to the mine by way of the Burlington railroad tracks and no evidence was presented to disprove that he had taken that route on his way there on the night that he was killed and that he was killed by accident when struck by the train. Coroner Sellergren was assisted at the hearing by County Attorney Lester L. Osborn. Witnesses who testified were Mrs. Lester L. Ankeny, Noble Linrooth, Don Figgins, Florets English, Roy Wright, Glen Pace, and F. E. Butler. LESLIE ANKENY IS BURIED WITH MILITARY HONORS The military service for Leslie L. Ankeny, 26, who was killed early Tuesday morning of last week when he was hit by a Burlington railroad train, was held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ankeny on West Sixth Stree, with the Rev. W. P. Clayburg, pastor of the Methodist Church, delivering the sermon. Burial Was in the Villisca Cemetery. The music was by Mrs. Albert F. Davie of Villisca, and Mrs. Wilson Clemmons of Atlantic, accompanied on the piano by Miss Elzene Routh of Villisca. The pall beareswere Sergents Everet Cohoon, Howard Calver, Garald Narigon, Corpals Donald Figgins, Harry Scott, and Lloyd Burgman. The firing squad was commanded by 1st Sgt. Leonard Kelley and composted of Sergents Lewis McCoy and Tim Marsh, Corporals Kenneth Narigon, Robert Dunn, Privates George White, Ernst Enzell, Leonard Ashmore, and Ivan Strait, Pvt. Stanley Moyer served as bugler. Other members of Company F. dressed in civilian clothes attended the funeral. Relatives and friends who attended from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Al Graves, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Graves, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Broden and family, and Sam Wright, all of Red Oak; Lonnie Milligen, Guss; Mr. and Mrs. Legan Milligan and family, Isaac Ankeny, Mrs. Harry Ankeny, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hakes, Mrs. Nan Ankeny, and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Ankeny all of Hawleyville; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wilcox and Mrs. Ivan Wilcox, Clarinda; Mrs. Will Wilcox, New Market, Ed Campbell and Miss Verda Roney, Corning; and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Campbell, Coburg, Iowa.
