Mr. Herman had been in poor health for several months suffering from a serious heart trouble. Local anaesthesia was used and it was believed that the operation was a complete success. Mr. Herman had been removed from the operating room to his bed and apparently was resting well. His son-in-law Wallace Chaffee, was in Mr. Herman's room and was conversing with him at the time the end came. Not more than a minute or two before the heart attack came, Lou remarked to his son-in-law that he felt more comfortable than he had in many months. Mr. Chaffee noticed Lou's hand dropped at his side and saw his eyes close in death. The death of Lou Herman caused numerous expressions of regret because he was well known and everybody who knew him was his friend. Mr. Herman would have been 60 years old had he lived until March 5, 1921. He came to Brown county 40 years ago and began working on a farm. His first job was with D.K. Babbit and it was there he inherited his love for horses---fast horses. For years he was a well known trainer in Northeast Kansas. It was often said of Lou that he played the game on the square, that if a horse beat his horse there could be no doubt about the other fellow's horse actually being the fastest of the two. He settled in Hiawatha about 18 years ago and since that time his occupation was that of carpenter. He was entirely worthy of the fine friendships he enjoyed and his death brought sorrow to many hearts. Besides the widow he is survived by 2 children, Mrs. Chaffee and Cloyd Herman; a brother, Major A.H. Herman, and a sister, Mrs. Lydia Oliver, of Tracy, Calif., who is on the way to Hiawatha to attend the funeral. Services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at the home, 207 South Sixth street, and burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery. Knights of Pythias will officiate at the grave.
