When she was 18, she traveled on the ship Barbarossa, leaving from Bremen, Germany to arrive at New York on May 17, 1911. On the ship's manifest, she is listed as a servant. She wasn't so sure, but since she had always said... Read More	Magdalene Hirschler was born in Stachusreid, Eberbayern, (Bavaria) Germany to Ulrich and Katherine (Krehbiel) Hirschler. When she was 18, she traveled on the ship Barbarossa, leaving from Bremen, Germany to arrive at New York on May 17, 1911. On the ship's manifest, she is listed as a servant. Grandma said that as a little girl, she wanted to go to the United States. A man came to the house, and said he would go along with her to the United States. She wasn't so sure, but since she had always said she wanted to go, she agreed, thinking she would soon return to Germany. However, the man had different intentions, and Grandma didn't want that. So she went to Oklahoma for a time, and then came to Beatrice, Nebraska, where she worked as a servant for the Andreas family. She was earning $1 a week plus board, and realized it might be some time before she earned her passage back to Germany. Then Grandma fell in love with Grandpa, John Paul (J.P.) Andreas, and they were married. World War I broke out, and there were children, and one way or another, Grandma never got back to Germany until she was over 70 years old. There was only an apricot tree left on the farm where she grew up. She met a neighbor girl from long ago, but the dialect had changed so much that they had to visit in "High" German (the written language). During the years, Grandma did stay in contact with her relatives in Germany. My mother, Katharine, was encouraged to be a "pen pal" with the German cousins. When Grandma's mother, Madgalena (Dester) Hirschler, born April 14, 1860 in Thann, Germany, died Sept. 12, 1919 in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Grandma and J.P. Andreas soon welcomed the widowed Ulrich Hirschler to come live with them near Beatrice, Nebraska. Ulrich was born May 7, 1854 at Maisbrunn, Bavaria, and died June, 1940 in Beatrice, Nebraska. Grandma Magdalene left Germany in 1911. A family friend said he was going to America, and would be glad to chaperone her. Grandma felt a bit uneasy, but she had always said she wanted to go to America, so she agreed. She thought she would visit America and then return home. Turns out the family "friend" had designs, and Grandma did NOT appreciate that. So she went to live in Oklahoma, where there was a Mennonite community, with her sister Eliza (who came to America in 1906). Then Magdalene went to work as a maid in the Andreas' fancy stone home near another Mennonite community, Beatrice, Nebraska. She realized that at $1 a week + room and board she likely wouldn't be going back to Germany anytime soon. Then World War I started, and she didn't get back to Germany until she was 72. But she always kept up with letters. Magdalene and a handsome young son of the household, John Paul Andreas, fell in love. Despite the disapproval of the family, Magdalene Hirschler and J.P. Andreas married. At the time J.P. and his siblings were taking turns caring for his aged father, and the wedding weekend turned out to be the weekend it was J.P.'s turn--and his siblings wouldn't trade.
