Description	:	Malcolm F. (Shorty) Gleason, 89, of Laguna Woods, California and formerly of Denver, Iowa, died Tuesday, May 24, 2011 in Laguna Hills, California. Malcolm was born on August 9, 1921, in Milltown, Wisconsin, the son of George Herbert and Zora Faye (Phillips) Gleason. Although both of Malcolm's parents were raised in the Denver area, they moved to Milltown, Wisconsin, where they were dairy farmers. (Shorty) Gleason, 89, of Laguna Woods, California and formerly of Denver, Iowa, died Tuesday, May 24, 2011 in Laguna Hills, California. Malcolm was born on August 9, 1921, in Milltown, Wisconsin, the son of George Herbert and Zora Faye (Phillips) Gleason. Although both of Malcolm's parents were raised in the Denver area, they moved to Milltown, Wisconsin, where they were dairy farmers. All three boys, Waldo, Gordon and Malcolm, were born there and a daughter, Mary was born after the family moved back to the Phillips farm north of Denver. George Gleason died at age 39, leaving Faye and the children to operate the farm. Faye taught music (piano) lessons and the boys did odd jobs and went to CCC Camp to help support the family. Malcolm attended school in Denver, graduating from the Denver High School in 1939, and then went to work at a bank until January 6, 1943, when he was drafted by the U.S. Army during WWII. He served with the 280th QM Battalion of the 1st Army. He landed in the 3rd wave at Normandy and was involved in action in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe, while Waldo and Gordon served in the South Pacific and Philippines Island areas. Malcolm was honorably discharged on December 21, 1945, where he was awarded 3 Overseas Service Bars, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon w/1 Silver Battle Star and 1 Bronze Arrowhead, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation, WWII Victory Medal and the Croix De Guerre Pennant w/Palm. Following his discharge as staff sergeant, he enrolled at the University of Iowa using the G.I. Bill. He graduated in three years, and then attended the Thunderbird School in Phoenix, where he received another degree involving International Business. He finished that schooling in 18 months, and then was hired by the Bank of Boston. His first assignment was in Brazil, setting up branch offices in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. After going back to Boston for a couple of years, he moved to London, opening offices there, in Paris and Luxemburg. Panama was the next assignment and then to Tokyo, dealing with offices in Hong Kong, Manila, Taipei and Korea. His final assignment was in Milan, Italy for 3 years before his retirement to Laguna Woods, California, where he resided until his death. Malcolm traveled and worked in 5 continents, 14 countries and was conversant in 5 different languages. He had a passion for theatre, literature, music and all the arts. This was reflected in his collection of unique furniture and art that represents the world. His library of over 1500 books also reflects those interests. Although he was a highly respected world businessman and traveler, he always considered his roots to be in Denver, Iowa. He was the keeper of the family history and always represented himself, his country, his business with the highest level of dignity and integrity. Malcolm (better known as Shorty) will always be missed by those who knew him. Malcolm is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Dorothea Gleason of Denver; nieces and nephews including, Karen (Jim) Kurtt of Denver, Mary (Bill) Fitzpatrick of Waterloo, Leigh (Cynthia) Gleason of Peoria, Arizona, Peggy (Robert) Miller of Cedar Rapids, Dean (Judy) Gleason of Denver; several great nieces and nephews; and his special friends, neighbors and caretakers, Mike (Elizabeth) Straziuso of Laguna Hills, we thank you for all your care and dedication. Malcolm was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Waldo and Gordon, his sister, Mary, and a brother and sister-in-law, Gordon (Stub) and Florine M. Gleason. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at the Funeral Home in Denver, with Larry Stumme officiating. Burial with military graveside rites conducted by the Acker-Matthias American Legion Post #653 will be in Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. The family will greet friends on Saturday, June 25th from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Denver. Memorials may be directed to the Denver Sunset Home.
