Mrs. Ramona Briones, beyond a doubt the oldest living native Californian and probably the oldest white woman in the United States, lies ill at her home in Bolinas and her death is hourly expected. Mrs. Briones, who is 107 years old, was in the best of health up to about 10 days ago, when she was taken with a severe cold. On Friday her condition took a change for the worse, and although there was a slight rally Thursday the aged woman is in a condition of extreme danger. Mrs. Briones was born in San Diego in 1794, and moved with her husband, Gregorio Briones, now deceased, to Bolinas in 1828. The family was the second one to come to Marin County, and Mrs. Briones has lived at the place where she then settled ever since. At one time she was a large land owner and was considered quite wealthy, but, like many others of the old first settlers, lost everything after the "gringoes" came. The aged woman has over 100 living descendants. Five generations of these descendants are now living almost a stone's throw of her residence near Bolinas. There is her daughter, Mrs. Hiram Nott, a very old woman; her grandaughter, Mrs. Sam Clark, a daughter of Mrs. Nott; her great-grandaughter, Mrs. Lena McGovern, a daughter of Mrs. Clark, and her great-great-grandaughter, the infant daughter of Mrs. McGovern. Up to the time of her recent illness Mrs. Briones possessed all her faculties. She retained a good head of hair and most of her teeth, and was pronounced a very comely old lady. At the last great celebration of the Native Sons of Admission Day, she rode in a carriage in the procession, and it was one of her ambitions to be present at Sausalito when President McKinley visited the place in order that she might see the chief executive of the great nation whose life is not many years longer than her own. Published San Francisco Call June 25, 1901 Oldest Woman in the State Mrs. Ramona Garcia Munos Passes Away at Bolinas What is supposed to be the oldest woman in California died Sunday at her home in Bolinas. Her name was Ramona Garcia Briones Munos and it is claimed she was 107 years old. She was born, according to the records, in San Diego, and there are living to-day five generations of her descendants. In the early years of the last century Ramona Garcia, as her maiden name was, married Gregorio Briones and came north with him. The couple settled near where Bolinas now stands, and here the old lady spent the rest of her life. Her first husband, Briones, died, leaving three sons and two daughters. *She was nearly 80 years of age when she married Benancio Munos, Chilean, some twenty years her junior.* Her relatives in Marin county alone number seventy-six, including ten great - great grandchildren. The Rowson family of Sausalito are related to her. She was buried Wednesday at Bolinas in the old cemetery dedicated years ago by Gregorio Briones to all who lived on the original Briones grant. The services were conducted by the Rev. Father Burns of Novato and were largely attended, over sixty descendants of the deceased being present, representing five generations. Among those who attended the funeral from San Rafael were Henry and Peter Crane, prominent residents of that place and grandsons of Mrs. Briones.
