MARIAH MEARS SUCCUMBED SUNDAY Esteemed Crisfield Matron Had Been Ill Some Time FUNERAL SERVICES TUESDAY MORNING Mrs. Mariah Mears, one of Crisfield's most respected and beloved citizens and a life-time resident of the city and its suburbs, passed away at the McCready Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient for about a week, early Sunday morning. Mrs. Mears was sixty-three years of age and was the daughter of the late John and Mary Sterling. She was the widow of the late Gordon Mears, who for many years before his death in 1931, conducted a confectionary store on lower Main street, near the waterfront. Much of the early portion of her life was spent in the Lawsonia section of this city but for a number of years she had made her home on First street. Though of a friendly nature, Mrs. Mears was somewhat quiet and reserved and her greatest interest and concern centered around her family and her home. Although the majority of her children had moved to other states she delighted in welcoming them wholeheartedly back to their old home on the occasions that they had opportunity to pay her a visit. Even though she was in ill health for some time Mrs. Mears remained ever cheerful. She was a sweet motherly lady who obtained real joy in helping others and she could boast of a legion of friends who loved her dearly and whose sympathies are extended to the bereaved ones in their hour of sorrow. Surviving are six children, Mrs. Sue Nock, of Delmar, Del., Mrs. Gertrude Harbow, of Norfolk, Va., Mrs. Maggie Berman, of New Castle, Del., J. Aaron Mears and William Mears, of New York City, and George W. Mears, of this city. Two sisters, Mrs. Jane Cullen and Mrs. Lillian Sterling, of Lawsonia, and six grandchildren, also survive. Funeral services were held from her late home on First street on Tuesday morning at 11:00 o'clock with the Rev. J. R. Bicking, pastor of the Immanuel Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was in the Crisfield cemetery. Pall-bearers were William Sterling, Jennings Mears, Aaron Sterling, Harold Poleyette, Leon Sterling and Jarvis Sterling.
