Ferne was born on April 20, 1923, in Wells County to Ralph and Pauline (Kean) Starr. She was a lifelong resident of Wells County and graduated from Chester Center High School with the class of 1941. On May 16, 1941, she married Joe D. Holloway in Wells County. They shared 40 years of marriage together before he preceded her in death on Aug. 26, 1981. She was a homemaker and a devoted mother to her family. Ferne was elected Harrison Township Assessor in 1988 and served Harrison Township for 20 years before retiring in 2007. She was a active member in the Wells County Republican Women, where was honored as Wells County Republican Woman of the year in 2004. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Chester Center Night Clubbers. She also worked at the Parlor City Country Club. Ferne is survived by her children, Sally Jo Tinkel of Fort Wayne, Sara Jane (Eric) Jarrett of Liberty Center, Dan (Rose) Anderson of Bluffton, Jenelle (Fred) Webb of Fort Wayne, Jill (Kenneth) Ellenberger of Bluffton, Jim (Companion, Jessie Hall) Holloway of Poneto, Jerri (Don) Lehman of Craigville, Jon (Carla) Holloway of Angola, Jeff Holloway of Bluffton, Jody (Jodi) Holloway of Bluffton and Jay (Marie) Holloway of Hartford City. Also surviving are a sister Doris Miller of Kimmel; and 41 grandchild, and 33 great-grandchildren. Ferne was preceded in death by her husband Joe in 1981, and a son, Jack Holloway, in 2000. Friends are invited to visit with the Holloway family from 2 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27, at the Thoma/Rich, Chaney & Lemler Funeral Home in Bluffton. A service celebrating Ferne's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 28, 2011, in the funeral home with calling 1 hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Stahl Cemetery. Memorials may be made in Ferne's memory to Riley Children's Hospital, Angel's on Stage or to Wells County Animal Shelter.
