In April 1870 Martha, with her daughters, went west to join her son, Oren, in Iowa. Their journey included traveling from Fort Dodge in Iowa to Cherokee aboard a construction train. They homesteaded on Waterman Creek in Grant Township, O'Brien County, Iowa. They are recorded on the 1870 census in O'Brien County, Iowa dwelling with Oren.
