Funeral services were conducted at the home of Rev. Thomas G. Kelley of Brooks, assisted by Rev. Cory of Nodaway, Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The six grandsons acted as pall bearers and music was furnished by Mack Richey, Mrs. Glen Van Alstine, Mrs. Hefling, and Avery Lincoln. Interment was made in Methodist Grove Cemetery. Mary Ann Hedinger was born near Berne, Switzerland on June 20, 1841 and died at her home near Brooks, Iowa, December 18, 1926 at the age of 85 years, 5 months, and 28 days. She was the oldest daughter of Rudolph and Mary Hedinger and was the only remaining member of their family of ten children. In early youth she was confirmed in the Lutheran Evangelical Church and in this church she was a firm believer all her life. When in her early teens, she came to America by the old methods of travel of those days, being on the ocean fifty-seven days. The family settled in Monroe County, Ohio. It was here that she was married to Benjamin Walter, February 13, 1864. Ten children were born to them, three of whom are deceased. The living children are; Mrs Emma Hossman and Mrs. Louise Stillinger of Brooks, Edward of Villisca, Fred of Clarinda, and Henry, Frank, and Will at home. The deceased are Lena, Louise, and Ida. Realizing the possibilities of the west and having the spirit of the pioneer, Mr. and Mrs. Walter left their home in Ohio and moved to Adams County, Iowa in 1884 and three years later moved to the farm which has been the family home for nearly forty years. Besides the children there are seventeen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren who will miss her greatly and a host of other relatives and friend to whom she has endeared herself by her kind and loving ways. Mrs. Walter was indeed a wonderful woman and was a constant inspiration to the people of Brooks and the community. Though eighty-five years old she has been in good health with perfect eyesight and hearing until the time of her last sickness. She had been able to do her own work and was helpful in many ways. Many remember the happiness of the day when she and her husband celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1914. The next year her husband passed on leaving his wife to travel the lonely ride until she joined him last Saturday. She greatly merited the splendid tribute paid her in the sermon preached by Rev. Kelley when he took for his subject "Mother". The family have lost a devoted mother and grandmother and the community one of the finest of women, one of the truly mother type who thinks of others first and finds ways to be helpful to the end of the road. The whole community join with the sorrowing family in grief for the loved one. Relatives and friends who came from a distance to attend the funeral were: Mrs. A. E. Bogen of Arvedale, Iowa, William Probst and Ed Hedinger of Kansas City, Missouri, Raymond Hedinger of Des Moines, Iowa, and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Murdock of Malvern, Iowa, Fred Walter and family of Clarinda, Mr. and Mrs. E.
