Description	:	William Alexander Walter, Sr., was born April 8, 1878, near Sardis, Ohio and passed away about 11:00 a.m. June 8, 1948 in an ambulance en route to a hospital near Clarinda, Iowa at the age of 70 years and 2 months. He was the youngest son and eighth child of a family of ten born to Benjamin and Mary Hedinger Walter. He was the youngest son and eighth child of a family of ten born to Benjamin and Mary Hedinger Walter. When he was six, the family moved to Adams County, settling first in Brooks, then on a farm northwest of Brooks, and finally in 1886 on the family homestead a mile west of Brooks, where he resided for 57 years. He retired and moved to Brooks in 1943 where he lived until his passing. He was married to Olive M. Harris of Villisca on July 20, 1927. To this union were born two children, Annis N., now Mrs. Roylan D. Wilkinson and William Jr., at home. Besides the wife and children, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Emma Hossman and Mrs. Louise Stillinger of Brooks, two brothers, Edward R., of Villisca, and Frank B. of Brooks, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. His parents, two sisters and three brothers preceded him in death. As a child he attended Mt. Zion Church and later joined the Methodist Church in Brooks. after living in the same locality for over 60 years, he has gained the respect of the entire community. He was a jovial individual and appreciated his friends greatly. His beloved wife and children always came first in his thoughts. His many relatives and the people of the vicinity have been saddened by his passing and they will greatly miss his kindly presence among them. Funeral services were held from the Brooks church on Friday, June 11, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. V. A. Bloomquist in charge. Music was furnished by a quartet: James Penn, Wayne Freshour, Arthur White, and Harold Hefling, accompanied by Mrs. C. H. Odell. Pall bearers were Chas. Woods, of Nodaway. Albert Jensen of Phoenix, Arizona, Fred Hansen, Loren Fuller, Harry Stuva, and Orville Steadman of Brooks. Ushers were Byron Steadman and Martin Lawrence. Flower bearers were the members of the Youth Fellowship group which attended the services in a body. Relatives from a distance attending the services were, Mrs. Sam Schleiger and Anne of Lincoln, Nebraska, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Strong and two children of Maryville, Missouri, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Walter and three children of New Market, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Myers and daughter of Project City, California, Raymond Hedinger and Ronny of Des Moines, and many others from Villisca and Lenox. No greater tribute can be paid to Mr. Walter than the many friends who paid him their last respects at the service. Adams County Free Press, June 17, 1948, page 7
