Mary Christel Roberts, the second child of Merritt E. and Esther (Mattinson) Roberts, was born Feb. 26, 1916, in South Charleston. She is survived by her daughter Jean (husband Tom) Jeter of Lancaster, CA; her son Mark (wife Karen) Stegman of Carl Junction, MO, and a sister Martha Jo (husband Marv) Berschet of South Charleston. Mary Christel Roberts, the second child of Merritt E. and Esther (Mattinson) Roberts, was born Feb. 26, 1916, in South Charleston. She is survived by her daughter Jean (husband Tom) Jeter of Lancaster, CA; her son Mark (wife Karen) Stegman of Carl Junction, MO, and a sister Martha Jo (husband Marv) Berschet of South Charleston. Also surviving are five step-grandchildren, 12 step-great-grandchildren; three step-great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary graduated from Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio, in 1938 but didn't feel the desire to become a teacher until much later. She began her career locally at Reid Elementary School in Springfield then thoroughly enjoyed her remaining 18 years of teaching in California in the Lancaster School District touching the lives of many whom she taught. After retiring in 1981, she hit the high seas. Cruising was her passion. Her travels took her to all 50 states and 93 countries around the world. Mary was a sports enthusiast, both as a participant (tennis, golf, bowling) and as a spectator. She played golf into her 80s. Other interests included reading, needlework, word puzzles, and playing cards and other games with her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Jean Florence (1983), and brother Edward M. Roberts (1991). A memorial service in her honor was held April 17 in Lancaster. Her ashes will be inurned at Green Plains Cemetery near South Charleston at a later date. Remembrances may be made to a charity of your choice. Published in Springfield News-Sun on Apr. 28, 2009
