OBITUARY- MARY ELLEN PEABODY Mary Ellen Dressler, the second daughter of Joseph and Eleanor Dressler, was born January 8, 1849 at Washington, Ill. She passed away Tuesday, March 18, at the age of 96 years, 2 months and 9 days, after an illness of only ten days. At an early age she became a member of the Christian church, later transferring her membership to the Nemaha church. Her father served in, and died during the Civil war, leaving a family of four daughters and two sons. As a girl, she bore much responsibility in helping her mother rear this family of children. On February 7, 1869 she was married to Valentine Perry Peabody, a Civil war veteran of Washburn, Ill. Immediately they left Illinois, going to St. Joseph by train and then by boat up the Missouri river to Aspinwall. They resided on a farm in Nemaha county until 1904 when they moved to Nemaha City. There were nine children born to this union, of which seven survive. Her husband passed away January 11, 1918. She was an active member of the WCTU for many years. Those surviving her are: Mrs. Elmina Kindig, Lester M. Peabody, Nemaha; Mrs. Elsie M. Higgins, and Mrs. Mabel Russell, Auburn; Clarence E. Peabody, St. Louis, Mo.; Mrs. Grace Rife and Miss Alice Peabody, Berkeley, Calif. The daughters who preceded their mother in death were: Mrs. Laura Harris and Mrs. Ada Knapp. Besides her own family, she reared two grandsons, Charles and Earl Harris, and temderly cared for her aged mother. Other than her living children, she is survived by 17 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Minerva Davison of Auburn, many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Friday, March 21, at 2 p.m. at the Christian church in Nemaha, with Rev. R. E. Hanson officiating. Pallbearers were: Charles Duerfeldt, Elmer Allen, Rollie Morton, Frank Scott, Clyde Duerfeldt, J. O. Johnson. Interment was made at Nemaha cemetery with Casey & Timm funeral home in charge of arrangements. (Thanks goes to Researcher Barbara Schwartz for finding this information for her memorial.)
