PEABODY WAS PROMINENT MAN PASSED AWAY AT NEMAHA LAST FRIDAY Was Veteran of the Civil War and Had Honorable Military Record and Was Also a Member of the Nebraska Legislature. Valentine P. Peabody, a veteran of the Civil War and former member of the Nebraska legislature died last Friday at his home in Nemaha. The death of Mr. Peabody marks the passing of a man who had been prominent in private and public life and was in every way a splendid citizen of the community. He was born in Ceres, New York, March 15, 1842 and had reached the age of 75 years, 9 months and 26 days. Mr. Peabody moved to Athens, Ohio with his parents in 1844 and spent part of his early boyhood as drover and cabin boy on the Ohio river. In 1856 he moved to Illinois from which state he enlisted in the Seventeenth Illinois Volunteer Infantry. At the battle of Shiloh he received some slight wounds and was discharged but six weeks later he had re-enlisted in the Seventy-seventh Illinois Volunteer Infantry and served with Grant at Vicksburg and with Banks in the Red River campaign. He was captured and confined fourteen months in various rebel prisons in Texas. On four different occasions he made his escape only to be recaptured and punished by being bucked and gagged. He was a man who possessed a deep sense of loyalty and patriotism and gave to his country the noblest service in the hour of her supreme need. In 1868 Mr. Peabody came to Nebraska and settled near Falls City and on February 7, 1869 he was married to Miss Mary E. Dressler and they immediately came to Nemaha county and settled on a farm where they resided until thirteen years ago when he built a modern home in Nemaha where he resided until the time of his death. Mr. Peabody had received honors at the hands of his fellowmen, having been appointed census enumerator in 1880, and was elected to the legislature in 1881 and again in 1903. These positions of trust he filled with credit to himself and to the satisfaction of those whom he served. He took a deep interest in public affairs and kept himself informed and his sound judgment, unquestioned honesty and loyalty to the high ideals of manhood gave him strength of character and made him a citizen who was a power in the community. But that there was a fine touch of sentiment in his character is shown by the fact that among his most treasured possessions was a small silk flag that was given him during the days of the rebellion by a silken haired blue eyed girl and this he treasured above every souvenir that he ever possessed and his request was that this flag be buried with him was complied with. The educational opportunities of his youth were very limited, consisting of about three months in public or subscription school, but notwithstanding this hardship he was one of the best informed men in history and in the knowledge of public men and a general understanding of current events. Personality he was a man of quiet disposition and one who was respected because he had proven that he was entitled to respect. As a member of the G. A. R. and the A. O. U. W. he was faithful to the principals of these organizations and true to their teachings and precepts. Mr. Peabody is survived by his wife, two sons and five daughters, Lester M. of Nemaha; Clarence E. of St. Joseph, Mo.; Mrs. C. H. Kindig of Nemaha; Mrs. W. F. Higgins of Conrad, Mont.; Mrs. H. F. Russell of Howe; Mrs. G. E. Rife of Denver, Col.; and Miss Alice of Salt Lake City, Utah. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and two sisters, Mr. Eliza Fisher of San Diego, Cal., and Mrs. Lephia Harford of Randall, Kansas, they being the only surviving members of a family of eleven children. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Mrs. Laura Harris and Mrs. Ada Knapp. All of the immediate family were present except Mrs. W. F. Higgins who was unable to attend because of illness in her family and a grandson, Charles V. Harris, a soldier in the national army who was recently transferred form Camp Funston and could not be located. Being of a cheerful and happy disposition, Mr. Peabody was always very considerate of others, and especially during his illness was very patient and gave much thought as to how to make the burden easier for his family. In his passing the state has lost a good citizen, the community a good friend and neighbor and the family a splendid father and advisor. The deepest sympathy of friends and neighbors are with the members of the family in the hour of their sorrow. Funeral services were held at the Christian church in Nemaha at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning and was conducted by Rev. Sapp. At that time friends from far and near gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to the deceased and following the services the remains were laid to rest in the Nemaha cemetery.
