Injuries in a fall at the home of her niece, Mrs. Ethel Fasse in Wakefield, the previous Friday, hastened her death. Her daughter, Mrs. Henry Weir was with her to the last. Mrs. Sturtz had undergone the privations of the other early Kansans, but had enjoyed good health until the last few years. However, she seemed to be feeling better than usual before her fall, and was looking forward to visiting among her relatives as soon as spring arrived. Since the death of her husband in 1933, Mrs. Sturtz had made her home with her only daughter, Mrs. Henry Weir, her niece, Mrs. Fasse, and other relatives. Like other pioneer mothers, Mrs. Sturtz made many sacrifices and was most faithful in her duties as wife, mother and neighbor. She was a constant reader of her Bible; always willing and ready to help whenever she could, her hands were never idle. Mary Emma Hostetler, the daughter of Peter and Anna Hostetler, was born March 10, 1856, at Pittsburgh, Pa. [born near Meyers Mills (now Meyersdale), Pennsylvania ], and died February 24, 1941, at Clay Center, Kansas, at the ripe age of 84 years, 11 months and 15 days. She was united in marriage on July 9, 1875, to Cyrus J. Sturtz, at Pocahontas, Penn. A few years later, after her father had died, Mr. and Mrs. Sturtz, with her mother, four brothers and three sisters, came to Kansas where she resided for the past sixty-five years. They settled on a farm east of Wakefield, near Myersdale school house. Later they moved to the 80 acre place near Gatesville in the Bethany community, where they lived for over 50 years. To this union was born two children, Johnny Fredric, who died in infancy, and the daughter Margaret now Mrs. Henry Weir. Mrs. Sturtz was a good Christian mother and a member for many years of the Bethany Evangelical church. Her husband preceded her in death on Sept. 17, 1933, at their country home. She leaves to mourn her absence: one daughter with her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Weir; three grandchildren, Francis Weir, Marie Weir Baldwin, and Marion Weir; four great grandchildren, Lois Jean, Roberta Mae and David Lee Weir, and Barbara Baldwin; three sisters, Mrs. John Shandy of Wakefield, Mrs. W. J. Carpenter of Clay Center and Mrs. Kate Karmann of Junction City; one brother, Peter Hostetler of Industry; and a host of other relatives and friends. The funeral services were held at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon from the Wakefield Methodist church, with Rev. John Gilbert of Bethany church officiating, assisted by Rev. E. F. Markley. Music was supplied by the women's quartet, with Mrs. C. W. Rankin at the piano, and the burial was in Highland cemetery. Six nephews were pallbearers, John Carpenter, Lester Hostetler, Herbert and Herman Kormann (sic-Karmann), Earl and Clifford Shandy. The presence of relatives and friends and the beautiful floral offerings expressed love and sympathy.
