Previously I indicated one of the primary purposes of a trip my brother and I made to Pennsylvania was to see if we could find the grave of my great grandfather, Peter Hochstetler. Peter Hochstetler was born December 25, 1833, and died at age 42 on May 29, 1875, in Sand Patch, Larimer Twp, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania. This was 15 days before my grandfather Peter Franklin Hostetler was born in Sand Patch. In 1875 Sand Patch was a small community with several businesses. Now all that remains is a small storage building beside the railroad tracks. Our conclusion was that Peter Hochstetler was buried in an unmarked grave and there is no record of his burial. The following lead to this conclusion: 1. State of Pennsylvania records indicate a Peter Hostetler was a Conscientious Objector for the Civil War. No other Peter Hochstetler/Hostetler of an age to serve in the Civil War has been found in Somerset County, PA; therefore it is believed that this is our Peter Hochstetler. 2. In the 1850 census, Peter at age 17 is with his parents in Elk Lick Township, Somerset Co., Pa. Based on the date of birth for children, Peter and Anna Meyers were married about 1855. In the 1860 census, they are in Northampton Twp, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania, with three children; he is a farmer. In 1866, the Meyers Mill in Elk Lick Twp. has a "charge account" record for a Peter Hochstetler. By 1870 they are in Greenville Township, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania, with six children (two who were listed in 1860 are then deceased); he is a farmer. His assets were valued at $200. Finally, at his death they are in Sand Patch, Larimer Twp, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania, with seven children and one soon to be born. A different location each time indicates he was transient and probably never owned land. 3. A publication showing land and court records for Somerset County does not list any land transactions for a Peter Hochstetler/Hostetler. 4. The Somerset Herald [newspaper] does not have an obituary for Peter Hochstetler/Hostetler in 1875, nor was any other newspaper located that gave an obituary. 5. The Registrar of Wills, Somerset, Somerset County Courthouse, has a record for Peter Hochstetler. It clearly indicates he died May 29, 1875, intestate and his estate was administered by Peter Brown [Will #38, 1875, Peter Hochstetler--there is also a record in 1843 for the estate of another Peter Hochstetler -- obviously by other records the one born March 13, 1775 and died April 1843. Surprisingly, the Registrar of Wills indicated these are the only two listed under Hochstetler]. The Registrar of Wills, Somerset, Somerset County Courthouse, checked the Orphan's Court records and found no record for Peter Hochstetler nor his children; she said that if there are no assets, then there are no Orphan’s Court records. In the administration of the estate, after all assets had been sold, those to whom Peter owed payment received only a few pennies for each dollar. Included in paid expenses is a $25.00 fee for the attending physician during Peter’s last illness and a $15.00 fee for a coffin. Obviously then he was buried, but there was no money for a tombstone. Upon settlement of his estate, creditors were owed about $604 but received only .015 for every dollar they were owed. This supports that the family did not have the resources to move Peter's body from Pennsylvania to Clay County, Kansas. 6. We found no record of Peter’s burial. Descendants of Jacob Hochstetler, suggests Peter’s brother, John, was buried on the family farm; Peter may have been also. 7. In about 1878, not too long after Peter’s estate was settled, his wife, Anna, and children moved to Davis County, Kansas, joining Anna’s father and her siblings in that area. Anna lived over 19 years after Peter died. She died in Clay County, Kansas, October 8, 1894, in her 60th year. Her tombstone gives her date of death and age at death and on the other side gives the date of death and age at death for her husband, Peter. Peter is not believed to be buried there, but there are no records to clearly indicate he is not. Based on the distance and knowing the family finances, it is highly unlikely he was re-buried there.
