Goedken age 91, of Monticello, went to be with her Savior, in whose hands she placed her life and faith in, on Monday morning, February 13, 2006 at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held 11:00 Thursday morning, February 16, 2006 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Monticello with interment in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the University of Iowa Foundation, Hemophilia Summer Camp. She was preceded in death by her Parents, her husband Vincent, 6 sons, J.J., Ernest, Loras, Carl, Dennis, Thomas, 2 daughter-in-laws Jan and Karen Goedken, 2 grandsons, Clayton Goedken and Randy White, and a granddaughter, Diane Goedken, 3 sisters, Theresa Pins, Sister Mary Ernest OSF, Clara Pins, 8 Brothers, Vincent, Jerome, Albert, James, Anthony, Paul, Mark ,Louis Pins. Mary J. Pins was born June 3, 1914 at Worthington, Iowa. She was the daughter of John and Veronica Ament, Pins. Mary received her education at St. Paul's Catholic School in Worthington. Mary J. Pins and Vincent A. Goedken were married, February 5, 1936 at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Petersburg, Iowa. The couple made their home in Dyersville, Iowa where Vincent owned the Oliver Implement business. The couple later farmed near Manchester, Iowa for 10 years before moving to Monticello in 1955. Mary worked at the John McDonald Hospital in Monticello as a nurse's aide from 1957 until 1980. Vince preceded her in death on February 11, 1997. Mary's family was ravaged by hemophilia and then AIDS. Her son Thomas died in 1971 from hemophilia. Five other of Mary's sons contracted AIDS that they acquired through the blood products used to treat their hemophilia. From 1987 until 1997 Mary lost 8 family members, 5 sons, 2 daughter-in-laws and a grandson to AIDS. The tragic account of the devastating effects of AIDS on the Goedken Family was chronicled in nation wide media. Most notably in the Houston Chronicle, Des Moines Register News Week and People Magazine. The family would like to thank Pennington Square and the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the excellent care and kindness given to Mary the past five and a half years.
