In memory of May Albers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Albers, of Bendena. Died Jan. 8th, 1889. Aged 12 years, 6 months. At half past one o’clock, Tuesday morning, the soul of little May passed out of the dreary shadow of this world. May was a mild, sweet, lovable child, and was regarded by her friends as one who possessed the very soul of gentleness. Alas! The brightest star has gone out from our sky, the fairest, sweetest flower from our narrow garden, the gentlest soul from our little world! The Angel of Death, that skilled sculptor of dead faces, in chiseling out her dead features, made them very calm, and highly expressive of the victory she has gained over death. From the dead lips smiled the natural sweetness of the soul that the angel had kissed from them, and were it not for the colorless cheek, one scarce could believe that “On her lip that was so exquisitely pure, The dew of the damp grave had fallen.” Tears of her friends – and tears are prayers – fell upon her coffin-lid, when they came to take their last farewell; but needless were those tears, which shed, fall upon the ground, for when the soul of the child reached heaven, she knocked upon the gate and called to her Savior: Open the gate, my Savior, for me, It is thy own child calling to thee! Free is my soul for its prison of olay, Finished the book of my little life; Far, far from me is the mad world to-day, With its tide of tears, its pain and strife! Open the gate my Savior, for me; Turn with thy loving hand the key! Where breezes are sweet, where flowers are bright, Take thy child and sit her down.
