Description	:	DEATHS Maurice R. "Speed" Shannon, 79, of rural Hiawatha, died Sunday evening, Sept. 14, 1997, at Westwood Manor in Topeka, where he had been a resident for five weeks. He was born Aug. 26, 1918, at Hiawatha the son of Scott Andrew and Ida Amelia Carolina Nielsen Shannon and was a lifelong resident of this area. He was a 1936 graduate of Hamlin High School. Read More	DEATHS Maurice R. "Speed" Shannon, 79, of rural Hiawatha, died Sunday evening, Sept. 14, 1997, at Westwood Manor in Topeka, where he had been a resident for five weeks. He was born Aug. 26, 1918, at Hiawatha the son of Scott Andrew and Ida Amelia Carolina Nielsen Shannon and was a lifelong resident of this area. He was a 1936 graduate of Hamlin High School. Speed served during World War II with the Army Air Force in England and Germany with a B-17 squadron. He returned to the Hiawatha area and farmed before working for Wilde Tool Co. for 12 years. He later worked for Kansas State Highway Motor Carriers in ports of entry for 23 years, before retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Baptist Church of Hamlin, where he had been Sunday School teacher and superintendent. He was also a member of the Homer-White Post #66, Hiawatha American Legion; VFW Post #5210, also of Hiawatha and the B-17 Historical Society. He was a past member of the City Council of Hamlin. Mr. Shannon was married to June O. Ingle on Dec. 13, 1948 at Omaha, Neb. She died March 6, 1967. Survivors include five daughters, Susan Carlson and Kim Shields, both of Lincolnville, Ks., Kay Myers, Topeka, Ann Shannon, Las Vegas, Nev., and Beth Shannon, Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Alma Camblin, Fort Worth, Texas; three brothers, Lawrence Shannon, Kansas City, Ks., Forrest Shannon, Hamlin, and Thomas Shannon, Beloit, Ohio, and eight grandchildren. Funeral services are planned for 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18 at the Baptist Church in Hamlin Pastor Richard Gates of Topeka will officiate, assisted by Pastor Blaine Shaffer and Rev. Thomas Shannon.
