Description	:	Merril was born in Jefferson County, Iowa June 20, 1894, the son of Osmond and Stella Van Dyke Gowey. He married Anna Williams on Nov. 29, 1922 at her parents' home west of Pleasant Plain. A lifelong farmer near Pleasant Plain, Merril served during World War I and was an active member of the Pleasant Plain Friends Church. He was the father Herman Duane Gowey, Bruce Eugene Gowey, and Anna Marie Gowey Bales and grandfather of nine granddaughters. Merril was a great story teller.
