| Description | : | Michael Somers was a sailor, teacher and merchant. He opened the first store in the Crisfield area in 1854 with Severn Riggin (b. c1818) as a partner. He later operated a ship chandler's store on Old Island and conducted a navigation school there. Somers was one of the founders of Crisfield, patenting marsh land in 1858 that was to become the future downtown of the city. On November 27, 1856, he married Rachel H.
