The 1860 U.S. Census indicates that his birthdate is about 1825, the 1870 U.S. Census indicates a birth year of 1819, and the 1880 U.S. Census shows a birth year of about 1824. Michael Casey is believed to have arrived in the United States at the Port of New York aboard the ship "John Cummings" from Ireland on August 23, 1841, and the ship's manifest for that voyage indicated that passenger Michael Casey was 21 years old. At the time of Michael Casey's arrival in the United States, the Northwestern Virginia Railroad was constructing a spur from Cumberland, Maryland, to Parkersburg, Virginia, which required blasting tunnels through the mountains. Many Irish immigrants were hired to do this dangerous work, including Michael Casey. When he was injured on the job during construction of the Brandy Gap Tunnel, Casey was forced to quit the railroad and he settled in the nearby town of Jarvisville, Virginia. In 1855, Michael Casey married Margaret McKeown, a native of Harrison County, Virginia, and the daughter of Patrick McKeown and Mary (Curry) McKeown. The next U.S. Census in 1860 describes his profession as "Laborer", and states that the value of his personal property was $50. The 1870 U.S. Census lists Michael's profession as "farmer" in Ten Mile Township in Harrison County with the value of his real estate recorded as $175. The 1880 U.S. Census again records the family in the Ten Mile District and lists Michael Casey's profession as "farmer." Each census records that Michael Casey was unable to read or write, and the 1870 U.S. Census records that Michael Casey had become a U.S. citizen. Michael and Margaret Casey were the parents of five children: John Meredith Casey (1856-1905) - Married Tabitha Rosella Flint (1881) James Casey (ca. 1861 - 1921) - Married Amanda Perrine (1887) Patrick Casey (ca. 1865 - 1921) - Never Married Mary Casey (ca. 1868 - Unknown) - Never Married Annie Casey (ca. 1873 - 1950) - Never Married Margaret Casey passed away in 1891 in Salem, Harrison County, West Virginia, and her death record indicates that she was widowed. Michael Casey therefore passed away between the date of the 1880 U.S. Census and his wife's date of death, 12 Sept 1891. Michael and Margaret Casey were buried at the Coplin Church Cemetery in Salem, West Virginia.
