Read More	Margaret McKeown was the daughter of Patrick McKeown and Mary (Curry) McKeown. Patrick immigrated to the United States from Northern Ireland, and Mary was a native of Virginia. Their oldest child, Margaret was born in 1835 in Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia). The family appears in the 1850 U.S. Census in Harrison County with Partrick self-employed as a farmer with his wife and nine children, including Margaret who was 15 years old. The West Virginia Marriages Index records the marriage of Margaret McKeown to Michael Casey on October 24, 1855. Michael Casey was from County Roscommon in the northwestern province of Connaught. When he arrived in the United States in 1841, he was 21 years old, trained as a shoemaker, and a Catholic. He found his way to Virginia where he was employed by the Northwestern Virginia Railroad in the construction of a new spur from Cumberland to Parkersburg. Injured during the construction of the Brandy Gap Tunnel, Michael Casey had settled in Jarvisville, Harrison County, Virginia, where he worked as a laborer. After the marriage of Michael Casey and Margaret McKeown, the young family appears in the 1860 U.S. Census in Harrison County, Virginia, with their two young sons, John (age 4) and James (age 2). Margaret and Michael Casey are found in the 1870 U.S. Census at TenMile, Harrison County, West Virginia, with sons John, James, and Patrick, and daughter Mary. The Census indicates that Margaret could both read and write, and that her husband was working his own land as a farmer. The 1870 Census also indicates that Margaret's parents were farming an adjacent property to that occupied by Margaret and Michael Casey. Daughter Annie Casey, born 04 April 1873, was the last child born to Margaret. Annie (age 7) and her sister Mary (age 10) and brother Patrick (age 15) were attending school when the next U.S. Census was taken in 1880, and Patrick was also listed as doing farm work. Their older brothers were listed in the 1880 U.S. Census as working men still living at their parents' home, with John (age 20) selling dry goods and James (age 18) employed as a store clerk. Michael Casey was still farming, but had a disability that had kept him from working which was identified as "gravel" on the Census form, i.e., kidney stones. Margaret, who would have been 45 years old in 1880, continued to manage the household. Margaret died of tuberculosis on 12 Sep 1891 at Salem, Harrison County, WV. She was 57 years old and a widow by that time, and all but one of her children are known to have survived her. By the date of Margaret's death, her oldest son John Meredith had married and was the father of four children, and her second son James had married and was the father of two infants. Patrick and Annie Casey would never marry, but would share a household as adults. Whether Mary Casey survived her mother is unknown. And although no record of Michael Casey's death has been found, his grandson Edward N. Casey's "Grassroots and Clippings From the Hills" recorded that both Michael and Margaret Casey are buried at the Coplin Methodist Church Cemetery near their home just outside Salem, West Virginia. amg
