Most sincere and appropriate were the words of prayer offered by one of his comrades, Rev. George Smith of Delphos, and very consoling to the bereaved ones must have been the funeral message of Rev. Rollyn Kaiser of Beloit, a former pastor of the Christian church here, who in a brief address brought out the many noble traits in the life of the deceased, and showed his high character and the degree to which he was always willing to go in standing by his family, his friends and his community, even as he stood by his country in its time of need. A quartet composed of Mrs. Loel Nutland, Miss Dorothy Dopp, Messrs. O.F. Bearnes and E.W. McClellan sang several selections very beautifully. The pall bearers were John Harper, J.W. Studt, George Studt, Walter Butler, George Chapin and Ray Martin. The last remaining veteran of the Civil war, W.W. Palmer represented the G.A.R. at the service and the Arthur Pilcher Post of the American Legion formed a Guard of Honor at the church service and had charge of the services at Glasco Cemetery where the frail remains of the grand old gentleman were laid to rest. Mortimer LaFayette Woodward, son of Mahlon Woodward and Mary Anne Woodward was born Dec. 25, 1839 near East Union, Coshockton county, Ohio, and departed this life Jan. 27, 1927, age 87 years, 1 month and 2 days. Being the last member of his immediate family of five brothers and five sisters. When he was yet a small child he moved with his parents to Jefferson County, Iowa and in 1851 the family moved to Marshall county and located on a farm near Marshalltown, Iowa. The county was new and thinly settled and the work of home building was the business of every member of the family. As a young man he worked on the farm and attended school in the common schools of the country, and later attended the Iowa Lutheran College. After school he returned to the farm where he worked until May 1864, when he answered his country's call and enlisted as a private in Co. G. 44 Iowa Inf. He received his honorable discharge at the close of the war. In 1870 he was lured to the plains of Kansas, first locating in Washington county, but later, having heard of the richness of the Solomon Valley, he came here and homesteaded a farm 3 miles east of Glasco. On Dec. 6, 1871 he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Lavina Jordan and established their home on the homestead; here they lived for fifteen years enduring the hardships and trial of pioneer life in a new country. The new home was blessed by the birth of five daughters and 2 sons, five of whom survive their parents: Mrs. Allie Butler of Glasco, Mrs. Nellie Mary Boyle of Niles, Mrs. Orpha Ryan of Aakley, Michigan, Mr. Hanson S. Woodward of Glasco and Mr. Maurice R. Woodward of Wenatchea, Washington, all of whom were present except Mr. Maurice R. Woodward. Mr. Woodward and his loving companion shared their joys and sorrows for more than 50 years and the joys were more than the sorrows. The genuine hospitality of their home made it a real pleasure to have had a share in it, and to have been counted one of their friends. Mrs. Woodward preceded her husband in death just five years ago. Since that time Mr. Woodward has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. E.E. Butler and Mr. Butler. Up until the time of his last illness, Mr. Woodward took an active interest in the affairs of the community, state and nation. He read the daily papers and was familiar with the names and views of all the national characters. He especially liked to discuss their opinions on the questions of the day and the effect these issues might have upon the interests of our own state and community. In the affairs of church he was ever an active member, having served as deacon of the Christian (church) for twenty years when due to his advanced age, he resigned from active service and was made an Honorary Deacon for the remainder of his life. The schools of the community were or more (than) passing importance to him. Any measure that was for the betterment of educational conditions always received his earnest support. As a neighbor he was imbued with the spirit of kindliness and thoughtfulness. He took great pleasure in speaking the kind and cheering word, in lending a helping hand and giving untiring aid to a neighbor in need.
