Read More	Glasco Sun, Feb. 11, 1937, page 1: Beloved Citizen Died Last Friday Early Day Glasco Pioneer Dies From Injuries Received in Fall on Icy Sidewalks -------------------------------------- Nancy Ellen Rutledge Whalan was born in Davis County, Iowa, April 25, 1861 and passed on Feb. 5, 1937, aged 75 years 9 months and 11 days. She was the youngest child of William B. and Olive Celina Rutledge, who with their four children settled in our Glasco community in 1872. They found this land a virgin prairie, and in spite of the severest hardships of pioneer days founded a home in which the children grew to maturity and established homes of their own. She came from an unbroken line of pioneers, each generation moving farther west to the newest outpost of civilization. Her earliest recollections include the day of President Lincoln's funeral; her parents' plans of attending services being prevented by a heavy rain. She was a direct descendant of the Rutledge family of Virginia, one of whom was a Colonial governor, another a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Always an active and energetic person, her time and interests were devoted to her home, her children, and to her friends and neighbors in sickness and distress. Her children have found in her the boundless measure of mother love that so closely approached the Devine. She was a sincere Christian, uniting with the Glasco M.E. Church in early life. She was a member of the Epworth Bible Class and Ladies Aid and was faithful in her discharge of all church obligations. Her well worn Bible attests her love of the Scriptures. She was a charter member and past Noble Grand of the Glasco Rebekah lodge remaining an active member to the last. She is survived by her four children who are: Myrtle Lenora Fowler, Salina, Kansas; William A. Axley, Oakland, California; Olive Elizabeth Sutton, Kansas City, Mo.; and Mary Florence Halderson, Glasco. Also a sister, Mrs. Mary A. Copeland of Glasco, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church conducted by Rev. C.D. Gambriell. Burial at the family lot in the Glasco cemetery.
