Apr 28 1859 by drowning in the Mississippi River. Was steward on passenger boat, the husband (David Haney) of the affiant of which was captain. Sworn by Sarah C. Koonse Haney, sister of Naomi Criss. Feb. 7, 1908. Married second, Oct 23 1861 Patrickburgh, Owen, IN, Daniel Norris (Daniel was killed aboard the U.S.S. Sultana. The ship was set to return Union soldiers being held captive... It is ironic that both of them died on the Mississppi. ------------------------------------------------ OBITUARY Naomi Koontz was born July 9th, 1838, and died Jan. 18th, 1921, aged 82 years, 6 months and 9 days. She was born at Wellsville, Ohio, where she spent her youth. She was married three times. To her second marriage there were born two daughters, Jessie Norris, now deceased and Mrs. Ida Norris Hoyt, living in the State of Oregon. In 1867 she was married to Simpson Criss. They made their home in Indianapolis for some years, moving to Nebraska in the year 1873, driving thru in a wagon and settling a couple miles south of Loup City on a homestead. Their residence has been in this vicinity ever since. Mr. Criss died in 1906, since which time she has made her home with her son Simpson. Mrs. Criss lived to a ripe old age and her final taking off was merely the result of long years of toil and devotion to her loved ones. Mrs. Criss reared a large family. The three older being children of Mr. Criss by a former marriage: Jacob Criss of Drew, Missouri, and Harvey and William, deceased; Jessie and Ida Norris, by her second marriage, and the following: Haney Criss of Bruce Grove, Alberta, CAN; Mrs. Samuel Fletcher of Rockville; Ola Criss of Torrington, Wyoming; Mrs. Daisy Fletcher of Loup City; Simpson Criss of Loup City and Bert Criss of Riverdale, Nebr. Mrs. Criss was also the last of the fine blood line of ancestry of Mrs. James Conger of this city. She was a member of the Shiloh Circle of No. 5, Ladies of the G. A. R. In her youth she united with the United Brethern (sic) church but upon her coming to Loup City, there being no church of her faith here, she joined the Methodist church of which she remained a member to the time of her death. The funeral service was held from the Presbyterian church Thursday, Jan. 20th, at 1:00 o'clock P. M., Rev. J. H. Salsbury D. D. being in charge.
