Simpson last Wednesday morning was a distinct shock to this community, although he had been confined to his home for the past two months on account of a heart ailment, no one felt he would be taken so soon. Simpson Nicholas Criss, son of Simpson and Naomi Criss was born October 21, 1877, on the old Criss homestead near Loup City and departed this life at the Loup City hospital on November 19, 1941 at the age of 64 years and 28 days. His early life was spent on the farm. He was united in marriage to Miss Sarah A. Lofholm on August 11, 1905. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Criss built a home in Loup City where they resided for six years, later moving on a farm, where they have since resided. To this union three children were born, two sons, Lawrence and Donald and one daughter, Elaine.The deceased's parents, three brothers and three sisters have preceeded [sic[ him in death. He enlisted as a soldier in Co. M., First Nebraska Volunteers at Broken Bow in April 1898 and saw service in the Phillipine [sic] Islands, during which time he became a corporal in the army. He was honorably discharged a year following the war. He was a member of the county board of supervisors, the I. O. O. F. and Rebekah lodges, and had served on the fair board. Mr. Criss was a devoted husband, a loving father and a public spirited citizen who had the best interest of the community at heart. He was a man who loved his home and was happiest when his family was around him. Those who survive him are his wife, Mrs. Sarah Criss; two sons, Lawrence S. Criss on the Submarine U. S. Bass, and Donald A. Criss, who is a student in chemical engineering at Angelas, Indiana; one daughter, Mrs. Elaine Wilson; one granddaughter, Jo Ann Wilson of Ord; one brother, Bert Criss of Kearney; one sister, Mrs. Daisy Fletcher of Loup City, besides many other relatives and a host of friends whom they did not locate. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church at two o'clock Friday afternoon with Rev. W. P. Thompson officiating. A short prayer service was held at the home at 1:30 o'clock and burial was at the Evergreen cemetery, where members of the I. O. O. F. lodge conducted services. Honorary pallbearers were members of Company M. First Nebraska Volunteers as follows: Hugh Kenoyer, V. C. Talbot, and H. F. Kennedy of Broken Bow, W. B. Lawson and l. M. Clay of Ansley, L. F. Oxford of Comstock, Bert Fishburn of Grand Island, and Clyde Pinkley of Lincoln and also T. A. Gzehoviak and Matt Jazynka of Loup City. Besides the pallbearers, out of town friends and relatives attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Tom Haller, Mrs. H. M. Burtner and Mr. and Mrs. John Kissling of Litchfield, Mrs. L. F. Oxford of Comstock, Mrs. J. F. Wilson, Mrs. Ora Swancutt, Mrs. L. F. Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hanshew of Ansley, Mrs. Hugh Kenoyer, Mrs. Bill Wachter of Broken Bow, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Criss and son, Clyde of Kearney, Mrs. Roy Sturm, Mrs. Andrew Lolly and Mrs. Garret of Topeka, Kansas, Mrs. Virgil Cudwala and Aaron Fletcher of Grand Island.
