OBITUARY: Ollif Harold Thompson, oldest son of Winfield Scott Thompson and Martha (Rogers) Thompson was born on a farm south of Lebanon, in Smith County, Kansas on June 22, 1905. Read More	OBITUARY AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT HAROLD THOMPSON. OBITUARY: Ollif Harold Thompson, oldest son of Winfield Scott Thompson and Martha (Rogers) Thompson was born on a farm south of Lebanon, in Smith County, Kansas on June 22, 1905. He attended rural grade schools in Jewell County. On June 4, 1932 in Beloit, Kansas he was married to Ina M. Kindler. This union was blessed with a son, Kenneth. Harold and Ina lived their entire married life on farms in the Esbon and Guide Rock area. He was an avid farmer/stockman, farming many years in partnership with his brother, Claud who also lived with them for many years. Harold was a very active member of the Guide Rock Masonic Lodge, the Senior Citizens at Esbon, the Over 60 Club in Lebanon and the United Methodist Church of Guide Rock, Nebraska. He took great pride in his grandchildren and great grandchildren and cherished the time that was spent with them. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife Ina, who passed away May 2, 1978. He is survived by his son, Kenneth LeRoy Thompson and his wife Evelyn of Superior, his brother Claud Thompson and his wife, Pearl of Guide Rock, two sisters, Leta Silsby of Belleville, Kansas and Elta Kennedy of Cheyenne, Wyoming, two grandchildren, two great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Harold passed away Februaiy 26, 1991 at the Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior at the age of 85 years, 8 months and 4 days. Funeral services were held Friday, March 1, 1991 at 9:30 a.m. from the United Methodist Church in Guide Rock, Nebraska with Rev. Jack Sample officiating. Music was provided by a quartet of Kermit Jeffery, Curtis Jeffery, Ardean Jeffery and John Dillon singing "Going Down the Valley One by One" with Lonnie Buckley as accompanist. Pat Hunter was the organist Casketbearers were: Kurt Garman, Vaden Lane, Brian Boyles, Jim Teachworth, Marvin Boyles and Doug Boyles. Honorary pallbearers were: Bob Garman, Harry Kindler, Bruce Johnston, Delmar Boyles, Gene Kile and Wendell Ord. Masonic Rites were given by the Guide Rock Masonic Lodge $128 A. F. & A. M. Burial was in the Esbon Cemetery near Esbon, Kansas. (Newspaper and date were not recorded for this obituary clipping. Corrections were made here for the names of his father, mother, and sister. Some information about living persons was excluded.) ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Harold and his brother Claud farmed together their entire working lives, except when Claud was in the Army during W.W. II. Before the war, they rented land near their hometown of Esbon, Kansas. In 1946 after the war, they became partners with Clarence Johnston and bought land near Guide Rock, Nebraska. Harold and Claud made the farming decisions and worked the land. Johnston was primarily involved in land purchases and land clearing and leveling. Harold and Claud worked closely together, with Harold taking the lead on decisions about livestock and Claud taking the lead for crops. Their land holdings increased over the years until they had over 2500 acres, which was a very large farm at the time. Farming was done with machinery that handled two rows, as compared to the later machinery for large farms that handled 15 or more rows. Claud lived with Harold and his family. Harold's son Kenneth said that he thought of Claud more as a brother than as an uncle. Harold was seriously injured in the early 1950s when he attempted to service the drive belt on an irrigation system without turning off the tractor that powered the belt. His hand got caught in the belt. One doctor thought his arm should be amputated, but another doctor thought he could keep the arm if appropriate surgery was conducted. The latter doctor prevailed. This was before physical therapy was available. Harold had to use and work the arm himself. With much pain (and associated profanity) Harold gradually restored use of the arm.
