Description	:	Omer L. Derrick, 93, formerly of Hiawatha, died Wednesday afternoon, April 6, 2005, at his residence in Rancho Cucamonga, California. Omer was born April 21, 1911, at Surgoinsville, Tenn., the son of Andrew Jackson Derrick Sr. and Sarah Elizabeth Davis Derrick. He came with his family at an early age where they settled in Highland. He grew up there and attended schools, later graduating from Highland High School, prior to graduating from Highland Junior College. Before Omer was married, he worked a number of years in Alaska. Omer was born April 21, 1911, at Surgoinsville, Tenn., the son of Andrew Jackson Derrick Sr. and Sarah Elizabeth Davis Derrick. He came with his family at an early age where they settled in Highland. He grew up there and attended schools, later graduating from Highland High School, prior to graduating from Highland Junior College. Before Omer was married, he worked a number of years in Alaska. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. During the service, he enjoyed California and after being discharged from the service, he moved to Stockton and attended California Business College for two years and received an associate's degree in business administration. Omer was an entrepreneur in addition, most of his working life was spent as a psychiatric technician for the Stockton State Hospital before retiring in 1969. During vacation periods, he served as an inspector for the state of California inspecting tomatoes. He later returned to Alaska and worked on the Alaska pipeline, returning to the northeast Kansas area in 1976. He made Hiawatha home until two years ago when he moved to California to make his home with his son. Mr. Derrick was of the Methodist faith. He was over 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, starting at White Cloud, later with the Hiawatha Masonic Lodge No. 35, AF&AM, where he was a 33rd degree mason. He was also a member of the Ben Ali Shrine at Stockton, where he marched with the Drill Team. Omer was a former member of BPOE No. 1741, Hiawatha Elks Lodge. He enjoyed square-dancing and started a square dance club while living in California in his garage. He was married to Ruth M. Bechtold, Dec. 9, 1938, at Falls City, Neb. She preceded him in death Oct. 23, 1982. Omer was also preceded in death by his parents; siblings Charlie Derrick, Lissie Lovelady, Andy Derrick, Worley Derrick and Hannah Elizabeth Derrick, both of which died at a young age. Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Freitas of Peoria, Ariz.; a son, Terry Derrick of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; a brother, Doyle Derrick of Wathena; four grandchildren: Alyssa McDonald of Tanzania, Africa; Greg Siders of Huntington Beach, Calif.; Summer Demoff and Cody Sutton, both of Chino, Calif., five great-grandchildren: Edward Siders of Huntington Beach; Jacob Garcia, Tyler Sutton, Blake Demoff, Skyler Sutton, all of Chino; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services are planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Interment will follow at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha. Friends called at the funeral home after 9 a.m. Monday where the family met with friends from 7 until 8:30 that evening.
