Kerl American Legion Post # 39 in DuBois, NE OBITUARY- OWEN ANDREWS Owen Dwight Andrews was born August 18, 1921, on a farm near Humboldt, Nebraska, to Paul and Viola (Stalder) Andrews, died Tuesday, May 7, 1991 at the VA Hospital in Lincoln. Owen graduated from DuBois High School in 1939. He married Fern Alma Yoble on January 5, 1942. He worked as a farmhand until entering the U. S. Army September 24, 1942. He served as a truck driver in the 689th Ordinance Ammunition Company. He hauled rations, ammunition and other supplies from the rear to battalion depots in Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal and Honorable discharge November 5, 1945. Upon returning to DuBois he ran a gas station for several years, then he returned to farming. He worked as a carpenter during the slack season. He owned several trucks and hauled livestock for several years. He also had a small engine repair shop before he retired. At retirement he enjoyed wood crafts. He was a permanent member of the Chester R. Kerl American Legion Post #39 in DuBois. He held various offices in Post, County, and was Area C Commander in 1977-78. He was a Past Post Commander of VFW Post 9597 in Humboldt, a former member and past Fire Chief of the DuBois Volunteer Fire Department, Past Chancellor of Knights of Pythias, Castle Hall of Atlantis Lodge #94 formerly in DuBois. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Viola Andrews and his wife, Fern Andrews. Survivors are sons Jerald and wife Carolyn Andrews, and sons: Jerrad, Jerry and Jay of Bern, Kansas;Harold Andrews and daughters April, Charity, and Ashley of DuBois; Daughters Phyllis Smith and husband Carl and son Corey Young of DuBois, and Katherine Cavric and husband Robert, sons Randy and Joc of Bellevue; nieces whom he helped raise, Carol Ann Carr and husband Harold, daughter Erica and sons Austin and Adam of Seneca, Kansas, and Brenda Cook and daughters Nikki, Melissa and son Travis of Lincoln, NE; brother Myrion Andrews and family of Camino, California; sister Melva Jane Jelinek and husband P. J. of Lincoln and many nieces, nephews and many, many cousins and friends. Rev. Connie Buehler performed the services at the United Methodist Church in DuBois, on May 11, 1991. Carolyn Yoble accompanied Jay and Jan Fankhauser who provided the music. Interment was at the DuBois Cemetery with full military honors made by the Chester R. Kerl American Legion Post #39 and the V. F. W. Post of Humboldt #9597. Casketbearers were Leo Andrews, Clifford Buman, Richard Lee, Howard Rohlmeier, LeRoy Schnepp and Sterling Wittwer with the Color Guard from the VFWW Post 9597 of Humboldt. When things we have done are forgotten, And the trails we have made are overgrown, We will have the fond memories of each other To help us when we're on our own. A memorial can be left to the Owen D. Andrews Memorial Fund and sent in care of the Popkess Mortuary in Seneca, Kansas. A specific organization will be decided on at a later date.
