Pasquale Greco was born in Terravecchia, Cosenza, Italy on February 17, 1889. He first came to the United States when he was 20 years old, sailing on the S.S. Cretic which departed Naples on February 10, 1909 arriving in Boston, Massachusetts. His name is on a plaque dedicated to the First Generation Italians of Oelwein, Iowa. Pasquale Greco was born in Terravecchia, Cosenza, Italy on February 17, 1889. He first came to the United States when he was 20 years old, sailing on the S.S. Cretic which departed Naples on February 10, 1909 arriving in Boston, Massachusetts. At some point he returned to Italy, as he has an arrival in the U.S. on March 27, 1912 at the age of 23 years old. This time he arrived at Ellis Island on the ship Adriatic, which had departed from Naples. He was single at this time and arrived with the brother of his future wife, Pietro DeDeco (who was 18 years old). By 1914, he had moved to Oelwein, Iowa (as on the 1915 census, it stated years in Iowa as 1). He worked for the Chicago Great Western railroad there. He returned to Italy to serve in the Italian army in World War I. He was a foot soldier and wasn't in the war long when he was taken prisoner. He was kept in a POW camp in Austria for 3-4 years and had to work as a farmhand. After the war, he returned to the United States, again to Ellis Island, on September 10, 1920 on the ship Italia. He was 31 at that time. During his time in Italy, he married Emilia DeDeco, but she did not come to the U.S. with him in 1920. Emilia joined him in Oelwein, Iowa after arriving on the S.S. Cretic on August 12, 1921. Pasquale and Emilia had 8 children, all born in Oelwein, Iowa. He continued working for the railroad until his retirement. He always kept a large garden and baked bread with his wife (using 50 lbs. of flour at a time) in a brick oven. He was a hard worker and a devoted father and husband.
