He had been, a tiller of the soil practically all of his adult life, in Lincoln township, near Blessing, until 1915, when he retired and came to Waterloo to enjoy a competence earned by long years of honest toil. Mr. Kelly was born in County Cork, Ireland, November 1, 1837. His father died while Patrick was still a small boy. With his widowed mother, at the age of 10 he came to America, settling first in Wisconsin, where relatives were located. As soon as he was old enough, he began working about the mines of that state. In 1868 he came to Iowa, looking for an opportunity to better his condition. In Lincoln township, Black Hawk county, he found an eighty acre tract of prairie land which he purchased for $6 per acre. He then continued his travels westward, going to Wyoming and Montana. He prospered and worked on ranches until early in 1871, when he returned to his hometown in Wisconsin. A little later, on October 1, 1871, Mr. Kelly was married at New Diggings, Wisconsin, to Miss Catherine Barry. The couple came at once to Black Hawk county and began farming the eighty acres in Lincoln township. As quickly as he could manage the payments, more land was added to the farm until his holdings embraced 360 acres well improved. At the time of his death Mr. Kelly still owned that original farm and its additional acreage. To Mr. and Mrs. Kelly twelve children were born, nine sons and three daughters. Two of the sons, Timothy and William, were killed March 15, 1915, in a train-automobile collision. All of the other children, with the widow, survive. They are: Mary and Thomas, at home; John, Elkhorn, South Dakota; J. E. Dillon, Montana; Daniel M. Butte, Montana; Mrs. Martin Hogan, Wichita, Kansas; Mrs. William Cavanaugh and Mrs. Raymond Kelly, Blessing; Leo, Whitehall, Montana; and Clem, Great Falls, Montana. D. M. Kelly is a former attorney general of Montana. Thirty-three grandchildren also are living. M. H. Kelly, former postmaster, and Dr. T. F. Thornton, Waterloo, are nephews. A large concourse of friends coming from many sections of the county attended the funeral services, conducted at Sacred Heart Catholic church. Solemn requiem mass was celebrated by Rev. Father J. M. Molloy and Rev. Father E. J. Supple, pastor and assistant pastor, and Rev Father John Richard, pastor of the Blessing Catholic church. Pallbearers were Tom Connolly, Christy Cavanaugh, Mike Lonergan, John McKenna, Clarence Trainor and John Hayes. Burial was in the Blessing Catholic cemetery.
