A lifelong resident of Smith County, Kansas Paul received his formal education attending the Oriole rural school and the Lebanon (KS.) High School. He was united in marriage with Ruth E. Dillon on June 18, 1950 at the Mt. Hope Church, Smith County, Kansas. A veteran of the United States Army, Paul enlisted on September 21, 1951 and served his country until his discharge on June 30, 1953. He and Ruth returned to make their home and raise their family on the farm in the Lebanon, Kansas area. For a brief period of time Paul sold cars for Tom Kelly in Red Cloud, Nebraska and was also employed for twenty-five years with Ely Grain Company, Red Cloud, Nebraska. He was proud to have been elected and served his friends and neighbors as a Smith County, Kansas Commissioner for three terms. In his leisure time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, visiting with his friends and his membership with the American Legion. His love for his family was immeasurable and he especially cherished time spent following his grandkids activities. He was happiest on the farm and always looked forward to the time the family spent together, whether it was gathering around a bonfire or the dinner table. His personality was pervaded by his quiet, genuine nature and his quick smile. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure to know him. Preceding him in death were: parents; daughter, Jo Ann McCartney; daughter-in-law, Debbie McCartney; brother, Bob McCartney and brother-in-law, Wilbur Reibold. Left to treasure his memory are his loving wife, Ruth McCartney of Smith Center, Kansas; children, Paul E. McCartney of Hastings, Nebraska; David McCartney of Red Cloud, Nebraska; Michael McCartney and wife Sharon of Red Cloud, Nebraska; Debra Saathoff and husband Scott of Franklin, Nebraska; Lori Bortz and husband Darin of Smith Center, Kansas; 10 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; brothers, Lloyd McCartney and wife Mary Ann of Hastings, Nebraska; Darrel McCartney and wife Donna of Inland, Nebraska and Don McCartney and wife Barbara of Nelson, Nebraska; sisters, Mary Jane Reibold of Red Cloud, Nebraska and Linda Biltoff and husband John of Nelson, Nebraska and a host of family and friends. Graveside services were Thursday, 1:00 p.m., December 19, 2013 at the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Smith County, Kansas.
