It reads as follows: --- Yockley Griffin of Wayne County Indiana, was among the settlers of 1830. He located on McKenney's Prairie, where he had previously purchased 80 acres of land. With him came his family, consisting of his wife [Sally], and their children: Melinda, Margaret, Zodoc, Perlina, Elizabeth, Mary, John, and Elethe. Mr. Griffin resided in the township [Howard township], until his decease. His daughter Mary, in 1838, married Jonathan Dewey, who was one of the early settlers of Pokagon township, where he died in 1878. Mrs. Dewey, is still living, and resides with her son Henry C. Dewey in Pokagon. At the same time Griffin made his settlement, his son-in-law Jonathan Prather and his wife Rebecca arrived, bringing with them their children: William, James, Fanny, Lorvinia, Elizabeth, and Eli. ---------------------------- Land Records show that "Yokley" Griffin and his eldest son "Zadock" J. Griffin, jointly purchased a land patent from the U.S. Government, in Cass County Michigan, for 80 acres, on Feb. 8, 1831. It is described as "the West half of the South-West quarter of Section 8, in township 6" (LaGrange township). (Volume 34, page 393). (This was near the intersection of what is now Thompson Road and Korn Street, in Howard township, N.-E. of Niles, Michigan}. ------------------------------- Note: "Michigan Pioneer Collections", Volume 6, page 215, states that Zodock Griffin (Yockley Griffin's eldest son), came to Michigan in 1828, and died in Oct. of 1881. ---------------------------- A list of members of the Berrien County [MI] Pioneer Association, and their date of arrival, lists: "Griffin, April 1828" (no first name given). ------------------------------ The children of Yoakley Griffin and his wife Sally Mullican are: ----- 1. Rebecca ("Rebekah" and "Becka") Griffin. m. Johathan Prather, on April 22, 1819, in Wayne County Indiana. They followed Rebecca's parents to Cass County Michigan about 1830. ------------------------------ 2. Malinda Griffin. b. 1802, in South Carolina. m. # 1. John Skinner, April 9, 1822 in Wayne County Indiana. (Record lists "Volinda Griffins"). John Skinner was born about 1798, in Rowan County South Carolina. (John "possibly" died between 1829 and 1832). Two children with John: (1.) John Yoakley Skinner, born Feb. 9, 1825, in Wayne Co. IN. m. Nancy Hain, on Dec. 23, 1847, in Cass County Michigan. [See the memorial (with photo), for John Yokley Skinner (and some of his children), of Calhoun Co. Iowa on find-a-grave]. (2.) Thomas C. Skinner. b. March 11, 1829, in Wayne Co. Indiana. m. Jane Byers. d.June 20, 1907, in Silver Creek township, Cass County Michigan. Buried: Dewey Lake Cemetery, Cass County Michigan (per death cert.). -- m. # 2. Records show that "Melinda Skinners" [should be "Mrs. Malinda Skinner"] was married on March 8, 1832, in Cass County Michigan to Mason Colvin [the son of John Colvin Jr. and his wife Elizabeth Colvin, and the brother of Absalom and Wilkerson Colvin]. Children with Mason: Paulina Colvin and James M. Colvin (and possibly a Mary Colvin). Mason Colvin died on March 26, 1857 in Berrien County Michigan. Mason Colvin is buried in the Burke Cemetery, Berrien Co. MI., (possibly buried next to his daughter Mary (Colvin) Murphy). ["Possibly" moved there about 1910, from the Colvin Cemetery?]. Malinda is buried near their daughter Paulina (Colvin) Perkins, in the Cottonwood Cemetery, in Calhoun County Iowa. (See the memorial for Malinda Colvin and for their daughter Perlina (Colvin) Perkins, of Calhoun County Iowa on find-a-grave). --- Note: Also buried there in the Cottonwood Cemetery, are the wife of Mason Colvin's brother Absalom Colvin, named Sarah Ann (Foster) Colvin, and her daughter Lucinda (Colvin) Patrick. ---------------------- 3. Margaret ("Peggy") Griffin. [Note: Margaret's information needs additional verification]. Two marriage records found for a Margaret Griffin in Cass Co. MI: m. # 1. Lane Markham, on May 3, 1831. (Daughter Arinda Markham is living with Margaret's sister Lithy Gardner in the 1850 census). [Note: Lane Markham is listed in the Cass Co. MI 1830 census, living in Pokagon township. Number in family - 2]. --- m. # 2. Thomas Fowler, on Feb. 4, 1841, in Cass County Michigan. They had a daughter Mary L. (Fowler) Hamilton (1847-1939), who is buried in the Silverbrook Cemetery, in Niles, MI. They also had a son Walter Fowler, born about 1866 in MI and died July 25, 1885, age 19, in Howard township, Cass County Michigan. d. Margaret died Jan. 3, 1903, aged 71 years, 2 months, and 10 days, in Chicago, Cook County Illinois. Buried: Silverbrook Cemetery, in Niles, Michigan, near Thomas P., Walter, Wes John (John Wesley?), B. H., Archibald P., and Benton H. Fowler. Obituary for Mrs. Margaret Fowler published in the "Niles Republican II", on Jan. 8, 1903, page 5. The Niles, MI library also has several obits for both Thomas Fowler, and their son Walter Fowler. -------------------- 4. Zodock J. Griffin (also listed as "Zadock", "Zedock", and "Zodoc"). b. about 1806-1808, in N. C. Note: "Michigan Pioneer Collections" Volume 6, page 215, states that "Zodock Griffin (of Berrien Co. MI) came to Michigan in 1828, and he died in Oct. of 1881". In 1831 "Zadock" Griffin jointly purchased a land patent in Cass County Michigan, with his father. m. Records show that "Zodock" Griffin was married to Amanda Colvin, on Feb. 26, 1835, in Cass Co. MI. (Amanda was born 1819, in Kentucky). Amanda's death certificate lists her parents as Alsalom Colvin [brother of Wilkerson and Mason Colvin], and his wife Sarah [Sarah Ann Foster]. On May 1, 1839, Zadock Griffin purchased two land patents in Berrien County Michigan, from the U.S. government: 38 acres in Section 2 of township # 7, and 40 acres in Section 33 of township # 6 (Oronoko township). They lived in Berrien Co. Michigan in 1850 thru 1880 census's. In the 1880 census Zodock and Amanda Griffin are living in Dayton township, Berrien Co. MI with their son Frank. --- Amanda Griffin died on March 22, 1898, in Gilmore township, Isabella Co. MI, age 79 years, 1 month, and 8 days. Children (all born in MI) are: Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Griffin, Almira, Sally, Gilbert, Darius, and Amy Griffin. -- Note: Zodock and Amanda's daughter Almira Griffin married # 1. Caloway Farris, on Nov. 13, 1856. ["Possibly" the son of Lewis J. Farris. Caloway was possibly born in 1832 in Ohio. See 1850 census of Newcastle, Fulton County Indiana]. Child with Caloway: Clara Farris, b. about 1866/67 in MI. Caloway Farris died in 1866 and is buried in the Colvin Cemetery (on Wilkerson Colvin's farm). Almira m.# 2. Wm. Henry Hendrickson (or Hendrikson) on April 22, 1871. In 1880 Almira and William are living in Otsego, Allegan County Michigan. -- (Zodock's son Gilbert Griffin died in Tacona, Pierce Co. WA, at the age of 89). d. Zodock died Oct. 1881 (per: "Michigan Pioneer Collections"). Buried: ? --------------------- 5. Perlina Griffin. b. 1813 ("about" Feb. 25, 1813), in Indiana. m. Wilkerson Colvin, on Feb. 21, 1833, in Cass Co. Michigan. They had six known children. d. March 25, 1850, in Berrien Co. MI. Note: The 1850 "Mortality Census" for Berrien County Michigan, states that Perlina was born in Indiana, and that she died in March of 1850, in district # 10, at the age of 57 (should be 37, per her headstone), of "cholera mubus", after being ill for one day. Buried: Colvin Cemetery (on Wilkerson Colvin's farm). --------------------- 6. Elizabeth ("Betsy") Griffin. b. 1813. m. Elizabeth was the second wife of Solomon Dewey, whom she married on July 18, 1833, in Cass Co. Michigan. Solomon Dewey was one of 14 children born to Henry Dewey and his wife Nancy Hunt, who were settlers of Cass Co. MI in 1831. Henry and his wife Nancy Dewey ocured 600 acres around Dewey Lake, which was named after them. Note: Solomon Dewey's brother Jonathan Dewey married Elizabeth Griffin's sister Mary Griffin. d. Elizabeth died in 1846. Children: Nancy, Mary Elizabeth, Dorcas, Sarah, Martha, Margaret, and (the only son) Jonathan Dewey. (Jonathan served in the Civil War as a drummer boy). Note: Elizabeth died while her children were still young. Her sister Mary and husband Jonathan Dewey, cared for her children until they grew up. Buried: Dewey Cemetery, in Pokagon, Cass County Michigan (Lot # 40). See her memorial on find-a-grave. Note: Google, "Henry and Nancy Dewey family history". -------------------- 7. Mary Griffin. b. 1817, in Wayne Co. Indiana. m. April 2, 1838, in Cass Co. MI, to Jonathan Dewey, and early settler of Pokagon Twp, where he died in 1878. They had children: Malinda, Albina (Dewey) Mater, Lucina, Levi, and Henry Clay Dewey. [They are listed in the 1850 census of Cass County MI, as living in Pokagon twp. Number in family - 6]. d. May 19, 1887, in Cass Co. MI. Buried: Dewey Cemetery, Pokagon, Cass County Michigan (Lot # 37). See her memorial on find-a-grave. ---------------------------- 8. John B. Griffin. b. July 26, 1819. m. 1844, in Pokagan township, Cass County Michigan, to Mary Ann Sink (who was born March 19, 1827, in VA). The 1850 census shows them in Christian County Missouri. They had 10 children, the first two, born in Cass Co. Michign, and the rest born in Missouri. John served in the Civil War, in Company A, of the 11th Missouri Calvery. d. March 2, 1892, in Cedercreek, Taney Co. Missouri. Buried: McCarty Cemetery, Cedercreek, Taney Co. Missouri. See his memorial on find-a-grave. ------------------------ 9. Elitha Griffin (also listed as Elethe/Lithy/Elethan/Lizzie). Spelled as "Elitha" in cemetery records. Cass County Michigan marriage records show that "Lithy" Griffin, was married to Davidson Gardner, on Feb. 5, 1835. [Note: In 1840 and 1850 census in Pokagon, Cass Co. MI. 1860 and 1870 census in Pipestone township, Berrien County Michigan]. Children: William, James, John, Chas., Almela, Mary, Leander (he m. Isabella Beekman in Sodas, MI), Sarah, Milford, and Andrew Garnder. (Living with them in 1850 is Arinda Markham, dau. of her sister Margaret). d. Elitha died on Nov. 19, 1892, at the age of 75 years, 7 months, and 11 days. Elitha and her husband Davidson Gardner are buried in the Shanghai Cemetery, in Pipestone township, Berrien Co. MI. [The obituary for Davidson Gardner was published in the "Niles Republican II", on Feb. 17, 1876, page 3.] The will for Davidson Gardner is filed in Berrien County Michigan, in Probate file # 932. __________________________ __________________________
Perlina was the first wife of Wilkerson Colvin, whom she married on Feb. 21, 1833, in Cass County Michigan. ------------------------------- Perlina was born "about" Feb. 25, 1813 (per date calculator). ------------------------------- They lived on 275 acres on Garr Road (1/4 mile North of "Little" Glendora Road), in Section 3, of Buchanan township (where this cemetery lies), North of Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan. -------------------------------- Perlina died of "cholera mubus" on March 25, 1850, in "district #10" in Berrien County Michigan. -------------------------------- The children of Wilkerson Colvin and Perlina Griffin are: --- 1. John Y. Colvin (per cemetery records). (Possibly named "John" after Wilkerson's father, and "Yoakley" after Perlina's father?) b. "about" Nov. 28, 1835. d. June 17, 1845, aged 9 years, 6 months, and 20 days. Buried: Colvin Cemetery. --- 2. Sarah Ellen Colvin. (Listed as "Ellen S. Boyle" on headstone). b. 1838, in Michigan. Note: The 1850 census of Berrien County Michigan (taken shortly after Perlina died), lists Sarah E., (b. abt. 1838, age 12), living with her father "Wilkenson" Colvin, and her two brothers, Austin (b. abt. 1844), and Thomas J. Colvin (b. abt. 1846). m. Berrien County MI marriage records show Sarah Ellen Colvin, was married on Jan. 1, 1857, to Wm. Boyd (should say Wm. "Boyle"). (William Boyle was born 1834 in Ohio). Wm. and Sarah Ellen had 11 known children. d. Sarah Ellen died on April 16, 1894. Buried: Mount Zion Cemetery, Berrien County Michigan. Obituary for "Sarah E. Colvin Boyle" was published in the "Buchanan Record" newspaper, in Buchanan, MI on April 19, 1894. --- 3. Caroline Colvin (per cemetery records). b. "about" Jan. 8, 1840. d. Sept. 1, 1840, aged 7 months, and 24 days. Buried: Colvin Cemetery. --- 4. Mary Elizabeth Colvin. b. Nov. 7, 1841, in Buchanan twp. m. Mary was married in 1860, to Joseph Snyder (per Mary's obit). Joseph is the son of John Charles Snyder and his wife Phebe Maddren, who were early settlers on the East bank of the St. Joseph river, in Section one ("then" in Niles township, "now" in Buchanan township). Joseph and Mary had five children: Lawrence W., John Will, Jay B., Leslie C., and Lillian "Lillie" (she married Sanford Collins). About 1876, Mary and Joseph moved to Kansas, Nebraska, and Dakota, but returned to Michigan in 1894. d. Mary died on Fri. Nov. 10, 1899, in Berrien township, Berrien Co. MI. Buried: Long Lake Cemetery, Berrien County Michigan. The obituary for Mary E. Snyder was published in the "Berrien Springs Journal Era" newspaper, on Wed. Nov. 15, 1899, page 3. -- Note: Mary's obit states that she also had a sister, Mrs. Perlina Palmer, of Denison, Texas. --- 5. Austin W. Colvin. b. May 2, 1844, in MI. m. Ellen Jane Smith, on March 31, 1866. d. 1926. Buried: Rose Hill Cemetery. --- 6. Thomas Jefferson Colvin. b. about 1846-47, on the Colvin farm in Section 3, of Buchanan township, Michigan (per his obit). m. Jan. 23, 1868, to Louisa C. McCoy, the daughter of Russell McCoy and his wife Esther Weaver. d. April, 1928, in Shelby, Oceana County Michigan. Buried: Mount Hope Cemetery, in Shelby, Oceana County Michigan (Lot # 259). --- 7. Perlina Colvin. NOTE: Daughter of Perlina or Anna?? b. about 1850, in Michigan. (Listed with Wilkerson in the 1860 census). m. Mr. Palmer. After Perlina died, Wilkerson Colvin was married two more times: (both widows) Mrs. Anna (Weaver) Ingleright, Dragoo, on Jan. 1, 1851, and then to Mrs. Elizabeth (Frazier) Estes on Oct. 25, 1866. --- Wilkerson Colvin died on Oct. 20, 1874, at the age of 60 years, 6 months, and 20 days, at the home of John W. R. Lister, in Buchanan, Berrien Co.
