NOTE: "Burial Records from the D.A.R. Tombstone Readings, of the Colvin Cemetery in 1930", lists: "Kerson Colvin - died 1874". It probably should have said "Wilkerson" Colvin (who died on Oct. 20, 1874). The information was possibly taken off of a broken headstone. The piece of a broken headstone (in the photo on the right), says: "ON COLVIN". The piece of headstone in the second photo says: "6 Mo. & 20 d's", which could possibly be part of Wilkerson's headstone, as his obituary states that Wilkerson died in 1874, at "60 years, 6 months, and 20 days". ------------------------------ Note: PLEASE, do NOT transfer this memorial to other web sites. Thanks, Nancy Heib. ------------------------------ His name is spelled as "Wilkerson" on the headstones for "both" his first wife, and his second wife. Also, in his obituary. --- Wilkerson had a nephew John Y. Skinner (the step-son of his brother Mason), who named his son David Wilkerson Skinner. ----------------------------- Wilkerson Colvin was the youngest of nine children born to John Colvin Jr. and his wife (also his cousin) Elizabeth C. Colvin, of Campbell County Kentucky. Wilkerson's father John Colvin Jr. died about 1814, the same year that Wilkerson was born. The 150 acre farm of his father John Colvin Jr. lying on Phillips Creek in Campbell County Kentucky, was then deeded to the nine children, who later each sold off their 1/9th share. Their mother was remarried in 1818. ---------------------------------- After the death of their father (and the remarriage of their mother), Wilkerson and his siblings moved from Campbell County Kentucky, to Montgomery County Ohio. Wilkerson's eldest brother Absalom Colvin, is listed in the 1820 census of Washington township, Montgomery County Ohio. The siblings spread out from there, to Indiana, Michigan, and other parts of Ohio. Wilkerson's eldest brother Absalom Colvin and his wife Sarah/Sally Ann (Foster) Colvin, and their four children, than came to Michigan about 1830 (or shortly before). Wilkerson, and his brother Mason Colvin, either came with Absalom, or followed him to Michigan. Alsalom Colvin is listed in the 1830 census of Niles township, Berrien County Michigan. Absalom Colvin then purchased a land patent from the U.S. Government, in LaGrange township, Cass County Michigan on April 1, 1831. His land can now be described as the land across the street from the Southwestern Michigan College. --- Wilkerson, his brother Mason, and Absalom's daughter Amanda Colvin, all married siblings of the Griffin family, in Cass County Michigan, in 1832, 1833, and 1835. They were the children of Yoakley/Yokley Griffin and his wife Sally Mullican, of LaGrange township, Cass Co. Michigan. --- Absalom and Wilkerson Colvin then purchased land patents from the U.S. Government, for adjoining property, in Sections 3 and 4, of Buchanan township, Berrien County Michigan (about 3 miles North of Buchanan), in 1838 and 1839. (This property boardered Oronoko township). --- The Colvin Cemetery was located on Wilkerson Colvin's farm (in Section 3), and the original Colvin log School (built in 1848), was located on Absalom Colvin's farm in Section four. An article in the "Berrien County Record" newspaper, in Buchanan, MI in April of 1875, tells of the Colvin School, located about 3 miles North of Buchanan, on the North- East corner of Aalfs Road and Little Glendora Road, being burned down on April 23, 1875 (six months after Wilkerson's death). Suspected arson, due to earlier vandalism. --- Wilkerson's brother Alsalom Colvin was a "Justice of the Peace" in Buchanan township, Berrien County Michigan in 1839, 1843, and 1847. The 1850 census shows all three brothers, Absalom, Mason, and Wilkerson Colvin, living in Berrien County Michigan. --- Wilkerson's brother Mason Colvin died in Berrien Co. Michigan in 1859, and is "now" buried in the Burke Cemetery (possibly moved there from the Colvin Cemetery about 1910?) Wilkerson's eldest brother Absalom Colvin subpposedly went to California about 1852 (per County history book), or after 1855 (per deed record), and died there. (Absalom sold his 1/9th share of his father's farm in 1855). (Did Absalom Colvin go to California for the Gold Rush perhaps?) Absalom and Mason Colvin's wives, and some of their children, later moved to Iowa (about 1865), and are all buried in the Cottonwood Cemetery, in Lake City, Calhoun County Iowa. --- (See the memorials for Wilkerson's brother's wives, Sarah Ann (Foster) Colvin, and Malinda (Griffin) Colvin, and some of their children, in the Cottonwood Cemetery, in Calhoun County Iowa). ------------------------- Note: Black Hawk War Muster Rolls, for Berrien County Michigan, published by the Berrien County Historical Association, 1997, for the 7th Regiment of the Michigan Militia, commanded by Col. Almanson Huston, of Niles, MI, Capt. Issac Shurties' Company, May 19, 1832 to June 21, 1832, include the following: "Absolom" Colvin, Pvt. enlisted for 8 days (#31). "Wilkinson" Colvin, Pvt., enlisted for 4 days (#36). --- See "The Blackhawk War", by Henry Little, 1875, on the following web site: http://www. pure-michigan.com/theblackhawkwar/7.php ---------------------------- Wilkerson was married three times. He was the father of 10 or 11 children (and the step-father to six more). -- Three of Wilkerson's children, did not reach adulthood. ___________________________

Note: This memorial was researched, and written, by Nancy Heib. ------------------------------ The Colvin Cemetery was located on Wilkerson Colvin's farm in Section 3, of Buchanan township, Berrien Co. MI. --- Note: About 1910, some of the graves in the Colvin Cemetery were moved to the Burke Cemetery (a short distance North), so that the township could move the road (present day Garr Road) out of a mud hole. The graves of Wilkerson's brother Mason Colvin (and possibly Mason's daughter Mary Murphy), were possibly among those that were moved. ------------------------- The photos on the right, show what is left of the broken headstones, at the Colvin Cemetery.
