Description	:	Peter Hayes Walker was born and baptized on March 13, 1841 at Presolee, Lancashire, England. At age 10 according to the 1851 census he was working as a dyer at his father's dye works. March 9, 1852 Peter left with the majority of the family from Manchester England arriving New York city April 24, 1852. The family moved to Rhode Island where Peter worked at Sayles bleachery until 1857. He was paid $.50 a day which was one half of the adult pay. At age 10 according to the 1851 census he was working as a dyer at his father's dye works. March 9, 1852 Peter left with the majority of the family from Manchester England arriving New York city April 24, 1852. The family moved to Rhode Island where Peter worked at Sayles bleachery until 1857. He was paid $.50 a day which was one half of the adult pay. In 1857 the majority of the family moved to Wisconsin including Peter. On October 17, 1861 he volunteered to join the 14th Wisconsin infantry Regiment in E company where he was paid $25 a month. He stayed until October 5, 1863 when he was discharged to accept promotion as an officer in the Sixth Mississippi colored infantry. As adjunct and First Lieutenant he was paid $125 a month. He stayed until October 1864 when he joined E Company of the First Wisconsin volunteer Calvary until he was mustered out July 19, 1865. He was the last of his family to arrive in Camp Creek Nebraska where he homesteaded on November 8, 1865. He built a 14 x 24' one-story house with two doors four windows and a shingle roof. He lived in the Waverly area the rest of his life and about 1870 became known as P. H. Walker. He held various jobs including Camp Creek assessor, farmer, justice of the peace, census taker, Nebraska state senator, shopkeeper, revenue agent, and postmaster. He was a charter member and commander of GAR post 38. (Grand Army of the Republic)
