He died Saturday, Sept. 21, 1996. Mr. Smith was a native of Gloucester County, and a member of Singleton United Methodist Church, and was active on the local, district and state level in the United Methodist Conference in Virginia. He was a former member of the Gloucester Rotary Club and other business and civic organizations, including the American Red Cross and the United Way. He retired in 1975 as district manager for Virginia Power, Clifton Forge, after 40 years service. Survivors include his wife, Audrey Elizabeth Quinn Smith; a daughter, Joyce S. Gilding of Newport News; a son, Peter W. Smith IV of Chesapeake; two sisters, Grace Lee Rowe of Gloucester Point, and Louise Nuttall; three brothers, R. Graham Smith and Kenneth B. Smith, all of Schley, and Bertram T. Smith of Gloucester. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Smith, and two brothers, E. Guy Smith and John Edward Smith. The service was conducted by the Rev. John Dennis, pastor. Burial was in the church cemetery. The family has requested that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Alzheimers Association ... or Gloucester Volunteer Fire & Rescue. Andrews Funeral Home, Gloucester, was in charge.
