Description	:	Member 14th, 15th, 16th California State Assembly José Ramón Mateo Hill y Ortega was the son of Daniel Antonio Hill and María Rafaela Sabina Luísa Ortega y Olivera. He was baptized at the Santa Bárbara Presidio Chapel November 2, 1839 (BP Baptism 01348). While attending college back East, Ramon held office as armorer at the Mount St. James Fencing Club, organized in October, 1859. In 1860 he received an A.B. in philosophy and gave the valedictory speech at his graduation. Read More	Member 14th, 15th, 16th California State Assembly José Ramón Mateo Hill y Ortega was the son of Daniel Antonio Hill and María Rafaela Sabina Luísa Ortega y Olivera. He was baptized at the Santa Bárbara Presidio Chapel November 2, 1839 (BP Baptism 01348). While attending college back East, Ramon held office as armorer at the Mount St. James Fencing Club, organized in October, 1859. In 1860 he received an A.B. in philosophy and gave the valedictory speech at his graduation. Fluent in both English and Spanish, he worked as a Santa Barbara County court interpreter, for which he was paid $3.00 a day. In 1863, he ran for county assemblyman on the Union Party ticket. In 1864, as assemblyman for Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, Hill wrote a State of the Union address entitled, "La Situación Actual de los Estados Unidos" (Housed in Folder 9). He also published poems in such newspapers as the New York Tribune, and the Santa Barbara Gazette (Ramon J. Hill papers, 1863-1933. Bancroft Library, UC Berkeley; California Blue Book, 1893; pg 298). He married María Anastasia Hearne y Gutiérrez at Santa Bárbara on September 14, 1869. María was the daughter of Valentine William Hearne (1827-1858) and Eduviges Juliana de Falconeri Gutiérrez y Ruíz (Jun 22, bap.
